My buddy's 96 powerstroke lost power while driving and then would not restart. We opened the fuel filter lid and there was very little diesel inside. So He tried to crank the truck while I watched inside the open bowl and a small amount of diesel would shoot inside...then nothing...then diesel shoot in again....then nothing again. My question is should the fuel pump shoot in a steady stream?.....or is it pumping correctly. I believe the truck was out of fuel....the fuel gage was not working when all of this occured because of a blown fuse.....so we replaced the fuse and put 5 gallons in with the same results. I think it is still not starting because the fuel level inside the bowl is still too low to be picked up. Any info on this?

Thanks,

No it will not have a steady stream like a electric pump would. It should squirt a fairly strong stream every rotation of the engine. Did you try topping off the filter, is the oil level up where it belongs, does the tach move while cranking the engine?

Sounds like it is time for a new fuel pump. Go to autozone or oriellys probably cheapest places the pumps are all make by Carter no matter what is on the box. Good luck

Lovely Wife had the same problem several years ago, diagnosed after extensive work as acute shortage of petroleum distillates.

Glad it was not an expensive fix.
