I started the chip test question last week. A second thread was started in response. Im not sure why it was just stopped but see no reason why this can not be accomplished. Someone in the second thread provided the link to that 2000 test I had found and first asked about. That one made me lean toward a hypermax 300? (I cant remember now)

Anyway, its been 5 years!!!

Someone should do a comprehensive side by side on all the major players. It looks like we have some who will participate. Why not make this a pet project for all of us and get all the makers we can into a shoot out?

In the closed thread started by Armchair engineer, in response to your dueling thread, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I'm curious.

In the closed AE thread, someone brought up the idea of Diesel Power magazine running with this idea. I too would grab that issue in a heatbeat...... I sincerely hope that those with open channles to the newly formed magazine do indeed contact them with this idea.

Since this is a "Ford" only forum, Diesel Power magazine can squeeze several issues out of this. One issue for Fords, one for Dodges, and another for Chevy's. All using the same truck (per make) so as not to have convoluted results that differ from truck to truck.

I'm sure every-one wants to know the scoop on the competiton, all would sell great.

Anyway, just wanted to keep the ball rolling /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My only concern would be that these test chips run the same programs they sell to all of us every day. Not some special tune just to dominate the dyno on this one test. And hand grenade the motor next week. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

FYI There is also another Ford only magazine that will come out on a trial basis called Ford High Performance Truck. First issue to debut in September. I will contact them as well to see if they would be interested.

Good point. It would help if the testers could just go and buy them off the shelf to test, but that doesn't seem like an option here. Maybe have an "average guy" buy them and test them in secret, then publish results, that way the program owners don't know they are being tested.

Cool idea overall, hope it works out.

That's why you would have to have EGT numbers and boost numbers so you would know that they are not just really hot programs. My question is, why would a vendor/ programer supply better programs to a test and not to the public? I'm sure if he had better programs, he would offer them to the public. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

OK. Maybe I am wrong about some things.

I thought there are programs that work great on the dyno/strip that will not be usable in long term use. Something along the lines "guaranteed to kill a stock tranny in less than a month" or "Truck will not idle". I realize I am ignorant on exactly what all is affected in a chip program but I thought I had this right.

Am I mistaken??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif I honestly don't know.

As for why someone would supply a hotter chip. I would bet that if you could boast your programming put down THE MOST HP. in the test. Your sales would see a rather dramatic jump. Regardless of what long term effects would be.

Maybe I am talking out the wrong end here. I am sure someone will come along and point out my ignorance.

I want to clarify that I have dealt with a bunch of the vendors here and with one notable exception they all have genuinely cared about how my truck runs and the long term effects of the improvements they have sold me.

Like in the other thread that they closed, I said they should do CP testing and test the tranny settings as well. The CP testing would show what kind of strain the programs are putting on the motor and the tranny testing would let you know how hard it is on your tranny. Hopefully the test would not just consist of HP and track times. I would like to see cylinder pressures, before and after intercooler temps, EGT's (pre and post), boost and know how well the auto trannies shift w/ the programs.

I would love to see that also. I just sent my TS chip back to Cayle (Brian's son)at BTS for some fine tuning. He has some good PMT1 programs that make good power without excessive timing (they are not for a weak hpop). His PMT programs work great with my BTS tranny. I'm also getting a new NVK extreme program with less timing to replace my old fuel7.

This is great. Lets not let this die out---it will really be something. If I had the spare coins I would just buy everything available and send it to a neutral test shop but alas, money doesnt grow on trees in Oregon. ('Oragun', for you out of staters)
