Over the weekend, I filled up my rear tank with "diesel" at the Moblie on M52 in Chelsa Michigan. I ran on the front tank for 2 days before switching over to the rear, when my engine crapped out after running like crap for about 10 miles. I was thinking my injection pump failed so have been pricing them...

Well tonight, when I started removing the pump, i noticed the ever distinct smell of gasoline!! Sure enough, the tank is filled with gasoline.

I am real worried about this. What damage could have happened? I am worried about things from cylinder scuff due to improper lube to degraded o-rings and seals if they are not compatible with gasoline. My only guess is to drain the tank, filers, and injection pump, refill with diesel, then start er up.. Guys, do I have anything to worry about? I am finding contact information for the station.. as my recipt states diesel.. I'm sure others ran into the same issue that day. help.

1986 F-250 6.9 International Diesel

Thanks,
Alex

My father has done this twice in the last 6 months.

His was easy cause he has the electric fuel pump. I just pulled the filter and let the pump empty the tank through the drain in the fuel filter housing.

On yours I would siphon out all you can, dump in about a gallon of 911 and fill her up again. After it has run a bit change the fuel filter again or for the first time, depending how you want to do it.

My pops ran his for over 200 miles with a large amount of gas in the tank two times. As of yet he has no issues, but he only has 85K on the clock.

Finally! An honest man! Usually, around here, it's always the "girlfriend" or "wife" or "daughter" who fills up the tank with gasoline.

Ok, back to topic:

If you can avoid it, don't take it to the dealer. They will charge you an arm and a leg for disposing of the gas plus probably flag your engine for no further warranty.

Like posted, siphon and/or drain out all you can. Don't worry about Power Service, etc. It adds some lubricity under normal conditions. Instead, in your case, pour a quart or two of engine oil in the tank along with fresh diesel and hope for the best.

If I'm not fueling at my local cardlock (and the nozzle handle is drenched with diesel like an hour ago) and am fueling up out of town on the road, etc, I just sniff the nozzle before I start pumping.

Funny, truly funny. I once posted that I did not know what a hose did under my hood, and admited I tried to do things to it reserved for the bedroom.

I have yet to live that one down. Thanks for the memory and laugh

Smart a$$! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually, when I first started putting diesel in my truck, because of the "gas in tank" threads here at TDS, I would check the label on the pump, check the color of the handle, look for the mess around the pump and handle, look at my reciept and make sure it said "diesel" and then finally confirm with the clerk that I was getting diesel. After about the third time of doing this, I stopped asking her because a) I was getting the impression she thought I was hitting on her or b) I was getting the impression that she thought I was an idiot. Now I just check the color, the mess and the reciept. We get along a lot better now.....

Well, the old beast is running again. All seems well so far. Right or wrong, I mixed 2 quarts of oil in each tank on the fillup just for a little tummy comfort with lubricity.. rather run rich and smoke for a couple hundred miles knowing she is safe.

I am traveling for work today and will be passing the Mobile station... with my recipt. Let you know how it goes.. If I can confirm, it would be nice to get my fuel, filters, and tow charges covered.

I assume you used motor oil. An alternative would be veggie oil too. Lots of lubrication and no smoke.

I did the same thing to my 07, except luckily cought it before switching tanks. Siphon all of the fuel out and add something to the tank to increase lubricity, IE Marvl mystery oil..etc..then fillup with diesel, run it down to a half tank and refill with diesel..constantly trying to get the diesel ratio more in your favor.
