I also posted this on the general diesel forum, am in desparate need of advise...

Over the weekend, I filled up my rear tank with "diesel" at the Moblie on M52 in Chelsa Michigan. I ran on the front tank for 2 days before switching over to the rear, when my engine crapped out after running like crap for about 10 miles. I was thinking my injection pump failed so have been pricing them...

Well tonight, when I started removing the pump, i noticed the ever distinct smell of gasoline!! Sure enough, the tank is filled with gasoline.

I am real worried about this. What damage could have happened? I am worried about things from cylinder scuff due to improper lube to degraded o-rings and seals if they are not compatible with gasoline. My only guess is to drain the tank, filers, and injection pump, refill with diesel, then start er up.. Guys, do I have anything to worry about? I am finding contact information for the station.. as my recipt states diesel.. I'm sure others ran into the same issue that day. help.

1986 F-250 6.9 International Diesel

Thanks,
Alex

If I was positive that I used a diesel pump, and had a receipt that said so, I wouldn't turn a screw until I talked to the owner of the fuel stop.

I never heard of this happening before, until a couple of months ago.

Now, I always request a receipt when I get fuel, just in case; but, I don't think that I could possibly put in gas and not catch it before more than a couple of gallons.

Diesel has distinct characteristics that are un-mistakable.

Longriders post has the right initial proceedure, once you have acertained the facts of "Whodunnit" then have the tank affected drained. Fill the tank with fresh diesel adding a double dose of fuel additive. Purge the fuel lines, water separator (drain) by removing the fuel filter and cranking (20 secs max per time) fresh diesel will arrive at the filter header (collect fuel in suitable container). Install a new fuel filter filled with diesel additive.......Stanadyne or Power Service. Attempt to start the engine to clear the IP and any other lines. Any residual in the IP/return lines and tank will be absorbed/nuetralized with fresh diesel and additive. There may not be any lasting effects, but if the error was the fuel supplier then requesting a qualified diesel shop do the work and replace the IP/re time, fuel filter, new fuel and required additives at their cost is normal proceedure.

Thanks for the input. My recipt does say diesel. I called the station last night. They would not own up saying that sometimes the recipt says diesel on other pumps... This particular station just has one pump separated from the gas pumps (near the kerosene). No questions i filled from that pump. We remember because its near a wooded area where we let the dogs run. Problem is, if they don;t own up, my only real option would be a lawyer, which i don;t its worth that.. But it adds up ($180 tow fee, $30 wasted fuel, extra cost/ time of my wife driving my back and forth to work...)

Another way to handle this, if you catch it quick enough, but not possible all the time, is to quickly return to the offending pump, before they have time to hide the error, and, with witnesses you provide, fill up a five-gallon can from that pump to prove that it is not diesel.

This will only work if done pretty quick.

Also, if they don't want to take care of the problem, and you are honestly certain that you are not the problem, then tell every trucker on the road that you get gas at the diesel pump.

The CB radio spreads news faster than the Pony Express; and soon, they will have lost all credibility as an honest place to trade.
