hey yall,
ive got a question about haulin a 5r.
right now im hauling a 35ft tailgater 5r with a F-250 gaser. it has the 1 ton suspention, looks identical to the 350's, and ive got the plow package. ive got plenty of power and the truck olny squats enough to hit the over load spring about 2 inches and the campers weighting in at i believe 15,000 empty. with 122 gallons of water in the front of the camper. if i were to get a diesel, wich im hoping to soon wat should i get to have the same preformance if not better then i do now. i have no complaints with the truck now and no problems.

You don't say what you have now, which could range from a 300 I6 to a 6.8L V10.

The 7.3PSD will have more power than any gasser but the V10 (V10 would be the same give or take). The 6.0PSD has more power but is trouble prone and best to be avoided.

The older IDI diesels have decent torque but not lots of horsepower so it takes some time to get moving. A 460 could walk all over a NA IDI under moderate loads.

Bob,

I'd be nice to get a bit more info on your current rig & trailer, but based on what you've posted so far, I'd look for a F-350 with a 4.10 rear. Do you want a crew cab? I have an 03 6.0, and haven't had one lick of trouble with it. IMHO, the 6.0 doesn't need the extra aftermarket stuff the 7.3's do to run good. With that size trailer, I would recommend a good gauge set and a 4" cat back exhaust, which will help keep the EGT's in check.

How new do you want to go? There are still some good deals on 07's out there, but they are a bit spendy. If you want a used one, get an OASIS, and have a good mechanic look it over - Also check & see if there's a water damage history (after Rita & Katrina).

One thing I'm curious about was your need for 122g of water. Was that all the tanks full? Most trailers I've seen come with about 40 to 80 gals fresh, & matching grey with a 40g black. Some TTs come with 40's for all three. With proper water management, you should be able to go 10 days with about 60g fresh. Being an old Navy guy, I can do 10 days on 30.

sorry about the lack of details.. brain fart. the truck ive got now is a 2002 F 250 single cab long bed, 4wd, plow package, triton 5.4 V8, low gearing in the back ibeleave in the 4's. 32" tires. the camper is a 35 ft tailgater 5th wheel. weights in about 15,000 empty, a carrying cap for it of extra weight is 4,000lbs(water and toys in the back) a 16K resse 5th hitch. yes, 122 gallons of fresh water. 80 gal gray water,40 gal black water.

Unless you either just HAVE to get a diesel or you drive a crapload of miles I would stick with a gasser. If I could do it all over again (and I had the time to find or order) I'd get the V10 over my 05 diesel.

Run the numbers (fuel cost, fuel mpg, initial up front cost, maintenance burden: oil changes, fuel filter changes etc). Owning a diesel is a very expensive undertaking and for a lot of folks they'd be better off with a gasser after all things considered.

I love my 6.o but again, if I could go back and change the clock in order that I had time to order a gasser that fit my need that's what I'd do.

15,000 empty....yes you need a diesel.....you could get by with a v10.....you will pass everything but a gas station.....6-8 mph....verses 13-16 with diesel.......also the 7.3 in stock form has 40 more horse....when chiped with a dp chip add another 80 horse....i will never tow with a gasser never again....

Before I bought my current F-350 PSD Dually, I had two F-250 CC SWB trucks, one a 2001 gasser and one a 2000 PSD, both 3.73 rear ends. The diesel was hands-down the best hauler, and got a lot better fuel mileage when towing. I tow a 4,000# boat with my gasser and that's about all it really wants to tow, even though the tow ratings are a lot higher. With the boat tied on behind, any acceleration will drop the gasser's tranny into 3rd gear as will any small hill or overpass. The diesel would just chug on down the road.

I would sure like to see a certified scale report on your rig. The weight does not seem right for that big of a rig. I just can't imagine hauling a 5'ver like yours with my F-250 5.4 gas truck.

My 2 cents.

With both truck geared at 3.73, a gasser would be well below its power range for towing. That's why diesel come with higher axle ratios than gassers (3.73 vs 4.11). The 2 engines have completely different RPM ranges.
