Seems that in the past there was great discussion on excess play in the gear box on the Super Duty PU. I just had an alignment done, and the technician wrote that there is "excessive up and down movement in the gear box sector shaft". Is this adjustable? The tech was gone when I picked up my truck so the service writer could only puke back what was written. Am I in for a new gear box? Tires are not wearing correctly, and the alignment needed only minor adjustment to be within spec, so I am assuming the slop in the gear box may be part to blame for the tire wear. I have not noticed any slopy stearing or wander. Thanks for the opinions and ideas.

there is an allen head bolt with a jam nut on top of the steering box, that adjusts the play between the gears, you kind of adjust it by feel, because if you make it too tight then the steering will bind. you kind of just have to feel your way through it

That is how I remeber the discussions. I assume you loosen the jamb nut and then the allen is righty tighty? Thanks for the reply.

First thing to do in adjusting the sector shaft is to remove the drag link end from the pitman arm. Then disconnect the batterys to de arm the air bags and remove the air bag from the steering wheel (2 bolts from the backside). Then using a inch pound dial indicator type torque wrench attached to the steering wheel nut you measure the drag it should be between 13 and 18 inch pounds. To adjust loosen the jam nut and turn clockwise. It can be reached from up top with a large extension.
