I've got a 7.3 IDI in a little 1988 dump. It's pretty tired. Low compression creating difficult starting. Glow plugs are good. I use block heater in cooler weather. I'm sure the problem is low compression. I've been told that one of these gear reduction starters might spin it faster and thus help the starting. I'd like to hear opinions on this, and if this is a good idea, what to buy. I've seen a wide range in price. Don't know whether more expensive is better or not. Thanks for any help. Allen

That might buy you a little time, but eventually you'll have to address the low compression

The stock starter should already be gear-reduced. Does it look like this?
