does the GEM have to be reprogamed after installation ?? i just got a new GEM module from the stealership.. should be here tommorow..i searched a some people say that after driving 10miles it will reprogram it self, others say the key fob may not work with going to the dealer, and some say dealer must reprogam...when i ordered it the guy at ford said "it wont work at all unless the dealer reprogams" he said i give them the old one and new one before installation of the new one...so thats like 10 different opinions..:crazy:
anyone installed one previously and can help?

Has to be done at dealer 99-01 have GEM 02 and up have VSM two different things, you could at least install it yourself and save that cost, but as for programming for the GEM needs to be done at dealer bring the old one with you, sorry for the bad news

I would install it yourself but don't plug it in till you get it programed, once it is programed everything should work fine, should take less than an hour but they will probably still charge for it, cps take 2 sec, sorry for the late reply I don't work normal hrs

9 years seems to be the break point for parts replacing. I've got an alternator, tensioner and idler to put in today (220A from DB). I need new brakes and tires. I guess it's better than a payment, right?

If it's not one thing it's another, but I've never heard of a bad fuse box. I sent you a PM on instructions of programming the remotes

I have a similar problem, and hope that some of you could help... I have a 2001 F350 dually 7.3 6spd. It is in WA, and i am in Alaska... My dad has had it to the stealership after replacing the starter solenoid 3 times. THey said the fuse box got water in it, and would need to be replaced... Didn't mention the GEM. I am flying in, and hoping to drive it while there, and possibly on a short 350 mile round trip. It is running now, but my dad says that some things are working and others are not. Any ideas of what I can do ahead as far as parts orders etc.?
Thanks in advance,
Garry in ALaksa

Your pickup engine and automagic tranny are run by computers, with numerous electronic sensors telling the computers what's going on. When you have a problem, the first step is to plug in a scanner or diag system that will read all the codes a Ford diesel can produce. Cheap scanners won't work, so you probably have to have a dealer or good shop plug it in and read all the codes. Only then will you have an idea what is wrong.

There are two different "fuse" boxes. The main fuse box is under the dash, but the "power distribution box" full of fuses and relays is under the hood. If your power distrubution box got soaked, then replacing it (and any ruined fuses and relays) might be the only thing wrong with the truck. But the only way to know for sure is to "pull the codes".

However, the codes by themselves, without a lot of experience in figuring out what the codes mean, may not be a lot of help. So in addition to the codes you also need the horse sense of a good shade-tree mechanic. That's why I try to know a local Ford diesel tech that's been around Ford diesels for at least several years.
