i have an 01 with 113xxx on it, new starter, trans, water pump and a few other things. Im new to diesels so spare me a little. At start up when i turn the key it seems to just turn over more than it should and then it finally hits. It seems like it shouldnt have to turn over that long, any help would be apprec.

Couple of things that you can check...

Batteries. Take them in and have them tested. They ned to be top notch since they engage the glow plugs and starter at the same time unless the engine is hot.

Glow plugs. You can test these using an ohm meter in the wiring harness. There are instructions on this site - I just don't have them handy. Relay might also not be ok - any smoke out exhaust when it does start?

ICP / IPR. If the ICP is reading the pressures wrong this can cause a delayed start. If the IPR is stuck or sticky, it can take extra time for the truck to start.

Oil. Always a good place to start - fresh oil solves many problems if it has been a while since oil change

Fuel Filter. Can cause a restriction if really bad. Will also cause reduced mileage, poor acceleration.

Air Filter. same as fuel filter.

Fuel Quality. Try some grey bottle power service and run it through. Are you driving the truck a lot? If not - this will help a little - but will not likely solve a problem if one exists.

I would do oil and batteries first, then check the GPs.

i just recently changed the oil and fuel filter, its been awhile since i cleaned my air filter. Ive got one of those air raid intakes. Ive got brand new glow plugs just never have put them in. When i had the tranny built we tested the glow plugs back in summer of 08 and they tested fine. I just bought some guages and when we put em in, im gonna check the plugs and relays again.

What is the temperature where you live? Is it only difficult to start when cold, or even after the engine has been warmed up? Do you get white smoke out the exhaust when cranking? Check this thread. It contains some good diagnostic information.

The more details you can provide about when the problem occurs and exactly what is happening (or not happening), the more accurate we can be in giving you suggestions.
