just talked to the dealer and they are telling me that the glow plug controler
won't work with the aftermarket glow plugs I put in... does anyone know about this?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

it's just not switching the plugs on

thanks and sorry my profile didn't show after edit
this is a 92 E350 with the 7.3 L and a banks turbo

I think i really blew it by now knowing what a bad rap the cheap plugs have
as i went and got the crappy schucks brand autolites out of convienence....

Re: glow plug relay on a e350 van where is the dang thing?

if it is the same as the F series, the relay module is behind the intake on the top of the motor, right against the firwall.

Seems like a Van would be nearly impossible to get to though

If it's on the back of the engine, all you need to do is remove the dog house and it will be right in front of you. easier than an F-series.

it is not difficult to remove, lots of cables but it is easier b/c you can get to it from inside the cab specially if the only thing you remove is the controller only. as long as the glow plugs are for your model it should be fine there are several brand for glow plugs. best i know of is the beru/motorcraft also called zd-9 this are of my preference and must work cause are the same ones ford uses and there are the constant duty, now this ones i believe there are some modification to be made before you have them ready to work i think the 6.9l guys use this kind on their trucks but they can also work on 7.3l.

Did you put something in there other than Berus?

If you did, same on you.

The CD glow plugs have the spade tips, but work fine other than that. They need only be "lit" for about 6 seconds to start on most mornings down to about freezing, so, should work fine with the 7.3 controller and relay system.

Beru, bosch, LDM, should all work. I highly recommend staying away from Champion and Autolite especially.

Most guys get the Berus. Tried and tested, safe and relatively cheap.

You should not listen to the dealer. Most of them haven't got a clue...

i had the idea there was some modifications to be made in order to use the CD glow plugs. i had the champion (jasper installed them for me) when we replaced them at Mel's house he finded they had distorted tips, especially the ones on 7 and 8th cylinders. We replaced them with beru zd-9 and i must say, it starts faster after they where installed.

I know some had better results from Jasper but i provably wouldn't buy another engine from them. good customer service though.

As far as I know, the only plugs that will not work are the "dual coil" variants, those need higher voltage. But among those that DO work with the original relays, Beru/Motorcraft is the best choise.

What is the brand and type of GP's in the motor? Without that, we are just guessing at answers. Also, (in order to serve you better) please fill out your vehicle info.
