My truck is starting hard I read through the hard start stiky (sp) and I think that it is the gpr. I call around the loacal part houses and they want right at $200 for one. I think this is a little high for a relay.

My glow plug relay is on its way out, hard starting once every couple of weeks. I just priced one out at 72.99 at the local Auto Zone. 200 seems a little high

The stealership in Lubbock just charged me 106.00 for the one I had to have when I was in that fine city. Auto Zone has one for about $35.00 but the terminals are 1/4 turn off from the factory ones. I was in a borrowed vehicle so I didn't try it. If you are close to a parts house, you might try one that isn't blessed by Ford.

I used to go through relays once a winter. I replaced mine with a heavy duty contactor rated for 200 amps continuous and 600 amps peak current. A Stancor contactor can be purchased for your truck for less than $50. Mine has been in for several winters with no problems. Read the this thread from the archives by Shoebear.

On edit: Mouser has them for $41.36. Never change your relay again. Stancor 586-902

You can use the Napa GPR 109. You may have to stretch one of your wires a wee bit to make it work because it's turnes 90 deg from the orginal but it will work fine. The Napa GPR 110 is the one that's a prefect match but it's about 60 bucks higher.

And it will crap out on you just like the OEM part. Put in something better, designed to handle the current the glow plugs receive every time you turn on the key. Last I checked the Napa GPR 109s were nearly as expensive as the Stancor. The downside of the Stancor contactor is you have to cut a small piece of L bracket material to mount it. No big deal. All the wires fit perfectly.

Hey Haul_n_horses,

I read the link just above. Next time my GPR fails I'll give the Stancor a whirl.

In Loosiana (sic), I doubt you ever need one. Why on the coldest day it must get below 50°. LOL. However, when it is below freezing for months on end, you need the Stancor.

Don't let Haulin Horses scare you, many folks have had the GPR 109 for many years. It's kinda like the CPS, some go through four in a year and some never need replacing. I bought two of the 109's for $33.00 total. I suppose if I go through these two in a fairly quick period of time I might try the so called heavy duty unit, but so far the 109 is doing just fine.

I finally installed my Stancore. I installed it without the L adapter, but the relay sits on it;s side. All wires reached easily and it has worked great for the past month.
I bought the relay a year and a half ago. When I bought my truck, I didn't know about this site or anything about diesels. The previous owner told me he thought the glo plug relay was going out. When it started getting cold, it was hard to start, so I foolishly had it replaced. Motorcraft part $85 Labor $50.
I watched him swap it out and and felt relay stupid. Next morning It didn't start any better. I then found this site and started asking questions. Found out I could have tested the relay in about 2 minutes. Also fond out haw to test my gloplugs. Turned out 5 were bad. 4 on one side 1 on the other. I Found instructions to swap out the glowplugs and did that. I also read about the stancore relay and ordered two of them. I think I paid bout $35 each. There was a discount for 2 of them. A couple of months ago, the truck started getting hard to start again. So I put in the Stancore. It has worked great so far.

I am not trying to scare anybody. Just relaying my experience. Those living in the Northern tier might need to rely on their GPRs more than those in a more temperate climate. Mine failed when it was below 0°F and with a windchill of probably -20°. I did not know then that I could jumper the two large terminals and bypass the relay. (Did not engage brain, I know.) So there I was freezing my a** off in that weather trying to replace the OEM GPR. Did not want that to happen again.
