Hey, Northern tool and others have the goldenrod filters for cheap. Around $25 for the head and element. I can't quite fgure out is they are considered water seperators. One of them mentions the filter material dealing with water and they do look like seperators with their drain valve but I want to be sure as I plan on bypassing my stock filter and want to be safe.
I couldn't find a goldenrod site, just vendors.
cheers.

Ah, thanks. so it looks like I would need two filters to do what I need in the goldenrod route. They are cheap, but a single unit would be better. I saw one on jcwhitney for about $50. Any other recomendations?
Can I get a cheap solution at napa auto parts?
thanks

Looks like they're only down to 10 microns... is that enough? Seems to me that most people are going down to at least 5 microns. Then again, 10 may just as well be overkill squared, and all the 5 microneers are gluttons for punishment.

10 is enough, I want this for my diesel fuel system, biodiesel in this case. The page linked shows one filter for water at 15 microns, and I'm not clear if that includes particles the way the descriptions are worded. Seems like you are suppossed to use it with the particulate filter that goes down to 10. 2 filters is too much especially since I just received the filter I will be using for my wvo side, this thing is humungous! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif and 15 microns on its own isn't going to make me feel too comfortable.
So I want a filter and water seperator in one as I plan on bypassing the stock fuel filter with a plugged element I'm working on.

The water trap element has an ingredient that captures water from the oil. It can only grab so much water before it is maxed out. As I look at filtration, I look at the micron level and how many square inches of filter material is in each filter. The more surface area, the more gallons it will treat.

I now have a Racor as a result of buying a Greasel kit. Very large, very good and very pricey. I'm going to look more seriously into Baldwin and Fleetguard. Both of them have significantly more filter surface area than the Goldenrods.

I bought a pair of Goldenrod filters (15 micron water trap and 10 micron) but found they clogged within a few gallons of filtering my oil straight from the restaurants. That's when I went to the bag filters for my shop filtering. As for use in a truck, they'd work but I'd rather go larger so I can go more miles between changes.

I'm filtering to 5 micron in the shop but 10 micron in the truck.

I made the goldenrod mistake, oil will not flow through it even under pressure. I prefiltered my oil and thought that I could give it a final cleaning as I pumped it into my truck (Wrong) it just trickled out.

I just used their 10-micron water-block filter (596-5) while pumping out of a restaurant container, and I was only able to get about 2.5 gallons out of it before I could barely turn the crank on the pump. I read the info on the filter and it says that as the water abosrbing element absosrbs its capacity of water, it will restrict the flow to signal a filter change. I guess it had reached its water capacity that fast. I was testing my pump (it was new) before I went over to the restaurant, with plain water. I had the filter removed during the test, but there was probably a fair amount of water moisture left in t he hose and pump when i started, so I am not sure how much it would of flowed had I not done that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

What filter are you guys using inline when you are pumping out of waste containers? I would like to eventually be able to pump straight into the WVO tank on my truck.

Just to clarify, I'm looking for a fuel filter/water seperator to replace the stock filter on the dino fuel system. Thanks for the feedback on the goldenrods, they don't seem to be the way to go. jcwhitney has what I need I think for about $50, I'll look into it more. This is after spending well over an hour at the counter at napa with a guy that just ignored me when I suggested he might get some help instead of flipping through the books and ignoring my helpful hints as to what he might be looking for.
I'm little frustrated after driving through heavy traffic and after that just spending another 3 hours waiting for firestone to release my van with the alignment worse than before I paid them $160 to fix it. I got my money back and it's another story that I may just post in the right forum for some technical and moral support. The world has changed, hard to find people that know their work.
I recently bought 3 household sediment water filters for $17 ea, at home depot. My friend told me he saw them for that price but I did not see them at the store I went to so he picked them up for me, I have a 30 micron in one and a 5-15 in the next and then a 1-5 I'm able to "cold" filter, It's close to 80 these days and my workshop is a metal container so it get's a lot hotter in there, but I did gravity filter 5 gals over night and it worked. I broke my plsstic drill pump from northern tool that I thought was the shiznet by forcing 20 gallons of cold oil through my 3 filter canisters. It's still a great pump with no restriction I think but mine is now dead /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have some 5 and 1 micron bag filters coming from filterbags.com ? and I bought a water seperating fuel funnel from west marine for about $30. It's about a gallon capacity and balances nicely in the neck of 5 gallon jugs. It says it is 149 microns. I wonder if wvo can be dewatered with this. It's designed for other fuels with water in and I just don't know about the make up of water mixed with cooking oil.
plantdrive.com has a wand pick up for oil for $125 It comes with cleanable mesh filters. One 70 microns and one 150. They advocate pumpimng straight into your tank after settling but on the road without settling even and letting the vormax filter fo the rest. Craig at neoteric/plantdrive told me he's getting 6000 miles between element changes in his mercedes this way. I'm going to get one of the wands but still bag filter down to 1 micron.
