I've got an '84 with a C6.. the truck came with A/C but I removed the compressor and other accessories since it hadn't worked for a long time anyways.. I did, however, leave on the condensor in front of the radiator. So here's my idea.. what would happen if I were to use the condensor as a tranny cooler??.. My first concern was for the tranny's ability to pump that much fluid through such a large cooler.. and second, I would obviously have to add more fluid into the system- would the weight of the fluid trying to return to the tranny when it's shut down have any effect on the tranny's gaskets??
Is this the dumbest thing you've heard of or brilliant? Has anyone tried this before?? thanks for any input.

i've done that several times before and never had a problem
it would be good to flush it with a solvent
just start it add fluid till its full

The transmission is rock solid, never had a problem with it.. but it has at least 120K on it and i've seen that chart that shows the life expectancy of the tranny versus the average operating temp.. it couldn't hurt to try to postpone the inevitable for a while, huh?

Earl,
I used one for my tranny cooler, just added it in front of existing condenser on my 84,(AC still works). Running down the road empty and not towing the tranny temps run around 140-150. Towing my TT it goest to 160-175. until I get to pulling up some passes then it jumps to 190-200. So I do not think it is a waste of time. One thing you want to do is leave the radiator trans cooler hooked up. Just plumb the external cooler so the fluid goes to it after leaving the one in the radiator.

Waste of time though...the C6 has very few problems

Any reduction in trans temp is not a waste of time. It is said that every reduction of 20 degrees doubles the trans life, no matter what make transmission that is the standard rule. I used a condensor from a 80's LTD for a trans cooler, worked great. As was said, run through the radiator and then into cooler and I would flush first with trans fluid.
