Hello, 2001 crew cab 4x4 7.3L. I noticed a slight noise coming from what sounds like the rt front corner or wheel area. Don't laugh but it's kind of a slow shh shh shh shh noise when moving along. Today was doing some hightway driving and was taking a sweeping rt turn exit onto a highway and it was very pronounced at the speed of about 35mph and the truck was taking some load at that corner. Stopped when the truck started going straight again. It had more of a grind grind grind sound. On the way back to my shop I noticed doesnt really do it when taking a left curve only rt curves. Doesnt really make any noise I can hear when making a left or rt turn at an intersection. Brakes arent making any noise when used and the noise doesnt change when I apply them. Truck tracks fine and has had new ball joints within the past 5k miles from the dealer. Sorry for the somewhat goofy explanation. I'd like to fix this on my own if I find out what it is, money is tight. All help greatly appreciated.JR

ha ha ha im sory dude i have no idea, its hard to discern sounds through written text. ha, man if i had to guess, no joke my truck made a shh noise a wile ago. it ended up being a section of the wheel well came loose and was sliding aginst my tire. only when i was driving cause the wind would push it.obviously
good luck man ,happy hunting

Sounds like you may have a wheel brg in the hub that is bad or possible problem with the brakes. I would put money on the hub.

Hub bearing has my vote. The Ford replacement bearing is only warranted for 1 year 12,000 miles, the NAPA bearing has a 1year unlimited mileage warranty.

I'd guees either hub assembly (bearing) or something kinda stupid like a stone pinched between the mud/dust plate and rotor.. You should jack up the front end and see if there is play. Grab the wheel top to bottom and reef on it to see if there is play.

I have the same truck. I had a bearing assembly go. It sounds sort of the same, but can also go away when you hit the brakes. I've done one on my own. As I recall, the hard part is getting the inner seal on. This is the seal that sits in knuckle. From what I remember, what I did is use the old bearing assembly as a tool to guide and seat this. From what I remember, I slipped it over the shaft and hammered on the old assembly rather then pound directly on the seal. ...going from memory here...

I wonder if I have a similar issue with my truck (hub assembly bearing). I have an F350 4x4 crew cab Diesel. I hear a bit of a slip/skip or slight tire rubbing when I make a U turn at slow speed. I don't recall hearing this before. The truck has 33K miles. I wonder if this is normal. The truck still stock. Same tires and wheels. I checked under the truck and no rubbing of any kind from what I can see. Any suggestions? thank you.

Hi, powdercoater. I'm a first time poster, and a long time lurker. My 2000 Excursion has what i suspect is a similar problem. It's been going on for a few months now while i'm trying to figure out the cause. Mine eventually turned into a grinding noise over time. It comes and goes, sometime it's set off by a bump on the road. I pulled the hub bearing assembly (which i have replaced two years ago) but everything appears to be in good shape except a detached dust seal at the end of the axle housing. This tells me that stub axle has been wobbling around. Although the bearings looked good and felt smooth, i had to conclude that the small bearing on the inside of the hub bearing assembly supporting the stub axle must be failing. At this point i thought i would have to buy another hub bearing assembly since the folks at Autozone told me it's not serviceable, but i have seen some postings about replacing the spindle bearing only. At this point i'm looking for some info on it's replacement. So if you can't find the source of the noise, consider this bearing. Sorry for the long explanation, but sometime being more detailed helps. I hope this helps you in some way.

I had the same thing. Bad Hub. It started on a 250 mile trip home, started quiet, got really loud at the end. I kept stopping and looking under the truck, but could find nothing amiss. By the time I pulled into my driveway, the wheel was really crooked, and I thought it was going to fall off. I thought it was a bad ball joint, but it turned out to be the hub. In the process of driving it home, I toasted the caliper and rotor too. Expensive day.

I jacked up the truck (2006 F350 4x4) on both sides and I did what "jtdiesel65" suggested. I did not see any play on either side. What I noticed is that there is some play on the gears (per say) as I rotate the wheel. I am not sure if this is normal....?
I think that is normal for the front drive shaft to rotate as I rotate one of the front wheels while the other front wheel is on the floor. Again, I only hear the noise when I make a full U turn. thank you

today I talked to a mechanic at the dealer. He said that I might have a front Hub locking problem (that is stucked) even thought the hubs are in automatic and I don't have 4H. That I should drive it in 4WD forward then in reverse, then in drive again but in 2H. This should take care of the locking hub issue. According to him this is NOT in the owners manual. Has anyone had this problem??? Any advice on a so called locking hub? Again, I have a 2006 F350 4x4.

Thats sounds similar to something I read on the forums in the past. The hubs can get stuck. You try to search for other "hub" posts.

I recently tried to get a hub warrantied that I got from powerstrokeshop.com that only has about 5000 miles on it and is 9-10 months old. No luck. They say Ford will only warranty it for 6 months now. Don't get it from the STEALER. Get it somewhere else that will actually warranty it.

If Ford's warranty is only for 6 months, maybe they should lower the price to half price. I had one croak in two months, and 22,000 miles, and you know what I was told. I said for my useage the warranty was 1 month or 12K miles. Try Napa, auto zone etc, and make sure of the current warranty policy.
