I know I've read it on here before but I just went through over 25 pages trying to find the symptoms of a bad CPS. In my search I did find some other things to check i.e. HPOP reservior and so on. I just rebuild my engine and got it to start and run for awhile. Then I spotted a fuel leak and took a few days to get a replacment o-ring. Got that fixed but now it cranks forever with spartic running then dies. I'm noticing sometimes the RPM gage doesn't move from zero then it will jump up and the engine will hit a few times. I get it to run but not for long. I haven't checked any wiring or the HPOP reservoir but the oil pressure does build up.

Just wanted to check if the symptons point directly to something specific.

I've charged the batteries, when the tach registers its show cranking around 300 RPM and it hits a few times. Then the tach quits working and no more hits. When the batteries start getting drained the tach jumps all over the place(key on, no cranking) and occasionally the check engine pops ons then goes out.

I've checked the HPOP resevoir its full, loosened one of the oil bolts at the head and had oil there. I get fuel from the banjo fitting, its not alot of volume or pressure, but I'm not able to check while cranking. Fuel seperator is full.

What else should I check and any clue why the tach works one minute then quits and then does the jumping around thing? As a side note should I cycle the switch all the way off and back on between cranks?

I've got two on order (one for the glove box).

Is there anything else I can be checking while I wait for them to come in?

I got it started, did a combination of things; replaced the starter, cleaned the fuel seperated canister (really nasty suprised it ever ran), loose nut on the IPR? (backside of HPOP), pulled glow plugs and put a little oil in the cylinders (spun engine blowing out the excess), retorqued injectors and let the batteries charge for 2 days. Put it all back together and it started on the 3rd crank.

Now for the problem, I let it run for a few minutes shut it off and restarted with no problems. I left it running while I picked up tools for 15 minutes or so and it just quit. Tried restarting and it cranks real good, catches a few times, smoke out the exhuast, but won't run.

I've checked all the fuses and relays. I'm letting it cool down and recharging the batteries and try again.

Any ideas?

On your rebuild of motor did you replace the fuel pump?
I would check fuel pressure.
You say you see intermittent tach with a maybe fire.
I would say electrical issues. Tach is mirror of CPS. Check connectors and wires from CPS to PCM.
Did you install a new CPS?

I'm still waiting for the CPS to come and no I didn't change the fuel pump. I'm leaning real hard to a fuel issue and definetly intermittent CPS problems.

I let it cool off a little bit and it started, idled fine but ran sparatic when I try to rev it up and eventually dies.

So I'm pretty much on hold until the CPS's come in and I can rule that out completely.

Its A-L-I-V-E......, I changed the CPS and its seems to be working fine, starts cold and hot and hasn't shut off on its own. Now if I can find a fuel filter (seperate thread) I'll be alright
