I just bought a 2002 f350 with 285k on it. When the engine is cold it has a hard time starting then it has to warm up for 20 minutes before it will drive. (if you try and drive it it has no power) The previous owner told me it has new glow plugs and injectors within the last 1k miles. It starts as if the glow plugs arent cycling properly. Its a california emmisions truck so it has the glow plug module. (no codes) I'm wondering if there is a good way to test the module? if i understand it properly the module replaces the relay? any help would be great.

Yes, the module replaces the glow plug relay.

You can check the condition of the glow plugs with a multimeter at the valve cover gasket pins. Check the Hard/No Start link in my signature. The module should diagnose itself. What are you using to check for codes. It has to be PSD capable to work correctly.

You might check the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve to be sure it isn't staying shut when it shouldn't be. That will restrict power somewhat if the engine is cold, but should open if you mash the go-pedal and you should have full power available.

Just a couple things to check, but you may have something else going on. Check those out and post back with more detail.

You should check to be sure the tube between the passenger side exhaust manifold and the EBP sensor mounted near the heater hose on the water pump. It can get clogged with soot and affect the operation of the EBP system.

I thought that the EBPS had no effect on the EBPV? For my understanding the EPBS send is signal to the pcm and effect the fuelling table. The EPBV is controlled by the oil temperature...

It does.
It can tell the ebpv to open from too much back-pressure.
But it also can affect tables in the pcm.

What's your weather there? If its cold, I recommend plugging in your Block Heater if equipped. Also, have your batteries load tested. I had hard start issues a couple weeks ago when it got cold(30*) My batts were shot. Replaced both and starts like a champ now. PCM needs a little over 12v to start I believe. Just my 2 cents.

I did not know this connection with the EBPV.

Thanks

Truck sat for two days and just now barely got it started after 5 or 6 attempts. Plugged in my code reader and got a p1670 (EF Feedback signal not detected) and had P0308 (Cylinder #8 misfire) stored in the pcm. Could this have to do with the hard starts? Truck has new injectors, glow plugs, and high pressure oil pump. Anyhelp would be appreciated. Merry Christmas!
