When you put it together did you lube the throw out bearing slide? What is the pedal assembly like? Are the bushings in good shape? Is the pressure plate stock, or is it aftermarket and heavier than it needs to be?

If it's a new stock clutch and it previously had an aftermarket clutch (Luk or others), the pedal effort will be higher. Lots of guys remove the assist spring to get a little better pedal feel with the aftermarket because the pedal is so light and may tend to stick on the down position. If the assist spring is gone with a stock clutch, the pedal will be real heavy, and you may have to reinstall an assist spring.
