I just harpooned my 08, before I started my distance to empty said 11 miles. The tank weight was 62#, empty I think they weigh 40~45#, I figure I had about 2~3 gals. left. When I was done I added 4 gals. and went to fill up, station was about 10 miles it took 25 gals. to fill to the top.

The pump shut off without any splash back and I added about .5 gal. to get it to the rim. before harpooning I could add 4+gals. slowly after the pump shut off and the foam died down to get it to the rim.

I used my bike/atv jack to hold the tank in place, it worked great. I lowered the tank a couple inches and stuck my head in there and unhooked everything then dropped it to the floor. Before I unhooked at the tank I drained the fuel filter and had zero spill at the tank. The fuel lines don't need any special tools to take off, you just pinch 2 plastic tabs together and pull.

I also cut the filler neck down, I don't know if that makes a diff. Glad I did the mod, it will make fill ups quicker.

i've decided that this mod only works well for short beds/small tanks. the first mod i did was the harpoon. it helped, but it still takes another 2 ~ 3 gals to get it to the cap in my truck. sure, it helped, but nothing like you or other members have described. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

'course, hardly anyone has a lb anymore ....

mod works FINE on my LB...the mod has NOTHING to do w/
the size of the tank...the problem is the length of the
vent tube (sticks too far down, and into the FLUID when
the tank gets near full)

um, yeah, which is what the harpoon mod is. i get that. i've done it. i just don't understand why my mod doesn't work as well as others have stated.

yours works just like previously described - only ~.5 gal to get to the cap??

Did you do the fill tube also??

On my long bed I only did the vent tube and had the same thing... I could still add a couple of gallons after it clicked off...

With my new truck I did both the vent tube and the fill tube.. and it's about .25 - .50 gallons after clicking off.

i don't remember - it was like almost 3 years ago. dang. i don't remember the fill tube hanging down like the vent tube did. or, i may have only been looking for the vent tube and not have noticed the fill tube.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

crap. well, now i've gotta drop the tank again to satisfy my curiosity... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hey if you have a couple of friends it's quicker to just pull the bed off... an air ratchet, takes out the 8 bed bolts and the three wire plugs behind the licenes plate.. then the fuel tube and vent tube....

Lift.... move.... check everything.... put back together... it is very quick to remove the bed.

Just don't forget to put the fuel tube and vent tube back on....... It can be awfully messy!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I've done long bed, short bed & the Excursion fuel tanks. The shortbed tank has a longer vent tube, about 4" IIRC, which makes the harpoon mod easy. Leave 1" & you are done. I leave the fill tube long & you can hear the difference in sound once the fuel reaches the fill tube, yet continues to accept fuel until the fuel level reaches the vent tube. The slight change in sound lets you know it's almost full.

The long bed tank vent tube is shorter from the factory, like 2 inches due to the tank being longer. Cut this tube down to 1/2", & it will give similiar results as the small tank.

On the Excursion, cut the vent tube completely off, flush with the top of the tank for best results.

Someone did do a write up on this, try a search. You need a pvc cutter and a way to get the big plastic sender nut off the tank. I have the correct spanner and torqued it back down to 55'#s. Another way is to use a hammer and screw driver or 2 screwdrivers to spin it off. There are 4 bolts holding the tank up, 6 holding the skid plate up, 1 wire harness plugged into the sender, 2 fuel lines to sender, 1 fill neck hose, 1 shut off hose, and 2 rollover hoses (these allow air back into the tank when the truck is sucking out the fuel, they close if the truck "rolls over"). Don't lower the tank more than a couple inches untill all hoses are unhooked, do the fuel lines first after draining the fuel filter on the frame rail, on MY08 I didn't need special tools to remove the fuel lines I just pinched the buttons on the hose real hard and pulled, but older models might, they sell for a couple $$ at any auto parts stores. Then unplug the wires and I removed the fill neck from the truck and left the hoses on the tank then lowered it a couple inches and removed the rollover lines. Once the tank is down spin off the sender nut making note of the direction the tubes point, the sender only fits one way, reach in and cut as much off as you can, my cutter left about an inch, that simple.....

Edit, I type to slow, someone already provided a link /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I did mine by lifting the front of the bed up with a floor jack and a 2X4, just leave the 2 rear bed bolts about halfway in. Makes for an easy one man job. I cut the vent tube so only 1/2" sticks down and did not touch the fill tube. It works perfectly, the other day I was down to 30 miles to empty when I filled it and it took 29.5 gals when it first clicked off, then I got another 1/2 gal into it. GREAT MOD !!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yea, I only did the vent tube on my early 99, (Long bed) and it never took more than 1.5 or so gallons to top it off, (Good enough for me,,) This is the first post I recall hearing about ANYONE cutting off the fill tube inside too,, sounds like alot of work, (What did you use to cut it?)

Same tool as I used to cut the vent tube, cheapo PVC pipe cutter from Home Depot. The fill tube was almost too big. Used a sawsall at to ream out the fill tube so I can fill up with the big trucks. Just took my time and went s__l__o__w.
