I have a question about my 07 truck it only happens in tow/haul mode pulling my camper. It seems to down shift maybe all the way to 1st sometime not all the time when slowing down and it feels like I have hit something Is anyone else having this happen by the way this truck is on the original program no programer all stock except as listed in sig.

My 05 does this when towing something like a 5000 lb tractor.

Its when you slow down and stop with the brakes and it shifts to 1st. It feels like the trasmission has exited the truck.

That sounds like it. So Aggieford have you found a cure for this.

I thought there was a program update to the trans that could be done on trucks that exhibit this issue.

I just got the latest flash done about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm having this same problem. Never had it before. It doesn't do it every time though, just sometimes. First time I thought I had been rear ended it was so violent! Since then it only does it occasionally. It also seems the new tow/haul program isn't as aggressive as it was before. Won't be able to get into the dealer for a while to have it checked out. I'm completely stock also.

May be it don't like coming home LOL.....

I had the same problem a year ago on my 04. Disconnecting the batteries overnight solved it for a short time. Maybe 100 miles of towing. The latest flash (induction) took care of the problem entirely. Of course the downshift is not as effective but still provides some braking.

Your 07 truck may have the lastest flash?? If so, maybe the batteries will take care of it.

I don't think the trans shifts down to 1st gear with T/H since an early reflash.

I'm in the middle of trying to diagnose the same issue with my 07. Actually had he pleasure of having it happen with tech driving the truck with laptop connected. Apparently on my truck the trans is in 3rd at very low speed and then decides to go to first and therefore the rather harsh shift(I too looked for the guy that hit me the first time it happened). My tech talked to Ford about how to resolve this, and they said to try driving and manually shifting the trans down to make sure that it engine brakes all the way down, and then they're going to check some pressures. He also said that 2nd gear is some how tied in(he knew, I just can't remember the exact conversation) with the overdrive, so it is not used on downshifts(that was from Ford). Anyway, that's all I can add, I'm going to do the manual shift, which I think should engine brake the truck(engine brake may not be the right term, please don't hang me) and take it from there. I mentioned the battery thing to him and he said that he thought the trans relearned itself every 5th cycle. I may of misunderstood him on that, but I'll try it anyway.

This may be an '05 and up issue, b/c I cannot get the transmission to do what yall are saying. When mine is downshifting, it downshifts into 3rd and then into 2nd, but I've never had it shift into 1st. Like someone said in an earlier post, shifting into 1st was only available with the early '03s. I couldn't understand why Ford would try and bring that back. This is a good one...yall please keep us posted on what they find out!

Thanks,

yeah i need help with this to. I can go down a hill throw it in tow/haul and tap the brakes and have the truck downshift. then the whole rearend hops, tires screech. People look at the truck like its going to fall apart. And i wont even try to bring it in for service because my local dealership gives the line "Oh you drive a diesel, its going to take about 3-4 weeks to make an appointment" haha yea ok ill be right there. what to do?

Reports certainly strange..1st gear downshift in t/h mode was elimated long ago (as mentioned) Early 03 same..kinda locked up tires & laid some rubber down on t/h 1st gear dshift, but...

After mine got reflased (1st time later on) no more 1st gear dshift in t/h, just two..one around 50 +/- & one around 30 +/-. But..I don't have any BIG grab your attention dshifts at anytime.

You guy's are definitely getting some wierd dshifts?

There never was a downshift to first gear in tow/haul. The original calibration had the 5-4, then a 4-3, then a 3-2. The 3-2 was the one that created the problem with the very harsh shift. That's the one that got eliminated.

After the change there were just two downshifts in tow/haul. 5-4 and 4-3. If you were on the brakes you could still get a 3-2 in tow/haul, but not when you were coasting without using the brakes.

Going back to the original question, I recommend disconnecting BOTH batteries for a few minutes. This will clear what the trans controller has learned. I suspect it has learned something wrong and it hasn't been able to learn it's way out. Starting over from the original values may fix it. Plus it's free to try it....

MK..tks for correction...it was orig. 3/2 dshift that was harsh. Curious..I've gotten a 3rd dshift in t/h less that 10 mph, however almost not noticeable & no real e. braking. Only recall it happening twice. Kinda odd how that works?

Mark, I'll give this a try. Towing the trailer next week, we'll see if there's a change.

I had this same issue back about 3 years ago, with the more aggressive earlier tow/haul version. The 3/2 downshift around 25mph was exactly as you describe; violent.
The disconnect of the batteries would clear mine up for several months to a time.
I knew when I finally took the updated programming I would lose the aggressive version, but did get it done last year to get the induction strategy when starting cold.
I was somewhat surprised that the softened version is almost as effective as the original, and I think I almost like it better. So far it has not had one violent shift with the update, so it may be something the trans learns over time.
As the drivers side battery is only hooked up to the passenger side, unhooking the passenger side effectively unhooks both. Try turning the ignition and headlights on too while it's unhooked to insure there is no spurious power hiding somewhere keeping the memory alive.

Disconnecting the batteries will not reset Transmission KAM.

My bet would be the intermediate sprag is not freewheeling all the time. I have had several of these not freewheel and they exhibit the EXACT same symptoms as your truck.

Last one I did had 175 miles on it, so it's not necessarily an abuse problem :)

I have an 06 f250psd and noticed the exact same thing last weekend pulling my camper in tow/haul going down hills hit the brakes and BAM! Felt like i was rearended .....did it probably 3 times whole weekend. I just figured it was more of my bad luck til i logged in tonight. My camper is not very heavy either about 6000 lbs ...... i pulled it last year with an 04 f150 5.4 and never had that problem.
