Excuse me if this is a dumb question, but the pic of the "old" axle on the trailer looks to have drum brakes. Don't all Super Duties have disc brakes front and rear?

Also, interesting thread. Good work by all.

Those shoes are the park brake shoes, the rotor fits over top of them.

Steven,

I'm not sure about the brake lines and power steering lines. However, when changing from front leaf suspension to front coil suspension, I have read a few threads on forums mentioning the need to change the power steering gear box from 1999 - 2004 to the 2005 - 2007. I looked on Ford parts website ( fordparts.com ) and it shows different part numbers and weight, but photos and dimensions are the same. I would contact Red Head Steering Gears in Auburn Washington. They are the experts. Evidently they developed a proprietary process to build bullet proof steering gear boxes. Ask them if the steering gear boxes are different between the 1999 - 2004 and 2005 - 2007 model years. I would also search the internet for aftermarket hoses. You might check with DieselSite in Florida. For brake lines...not sure about that. For brake lines, I would recommend Crown performance.

This thread caught my eye because I have thought about building a 2002 Ford F350 Crew Cab 4WD.....setting the cab, front clip, bed along with 7.3L engine and 4R100 transmission onto a 2005 - 2006 chassis, frame, and suspension...and installing a Carli 4.5 inch suspension system. I previously owned a 2002 Ford F350 Crew Cab 4WD SRW ( LB - 172 ) and I think it had just rear anti-lock brakes...although I might be mistaken. I now have a 2006 Ford F350 Crew Cab 4WD SRW ( LB - 172 ) and it has front and rear anti-lock brakes. This truck has all the parts and upgrades offered by Bullet Proof Diesel. It also has a BTS ( Brian's Truck Shop ) built 5R110. It would be interesting to learn and obtain information about converting rear anti-lock brakes to 4 wheel anti-lock brakes. No doubt there are threads discussing this change.

Anyone who's done this conversion, what radius arm brackets did you use to mount the rear of the arms to the frame?

I've got a 2007 4x4 front axle to put on my 2x4 Excursion and would like to use my original radius arm mounting brackets from my twin I beam front suspension. That would save me $400-$500.

Or were you forced to use the newer radius arm mounting brackets?

I'm going to be doing the swap in the near future I have almost everything but before I go into it I want to make sure I'm running the correct brake lines also what Power steering line needs to be replaced I've heard the return and the pressure so I'm not really sure and what size hardware is required for the new power steering box
New guy bumping this thread instead of starting a new one. Same questions as Steven Barnes...

Can anyone confirm the metric size and length of the bolts for the 05+ steering box on the 99-04 frame?
And do I need the pressure or return line off an 05+ truck?

Thanks!

I know for sure it is the high pressure line that goes from Hydroboost to the steering box that needs to be changed to 2005 hose.

I do not remember the bolt size- it has been awhile since I did the swap. If you look at my pics I went with a slightly longer bolt than the 99-02 and I believe it was 2mm larger diameter.

***ALSO TO RETAIN ABS***

I used the original 2002 rear sensor and installed it on the 2007 rear axle.

I had to swap the abs sensors in front axle to 2002 4WD senors. Apparently 2005+ went to a different style ABS. The earlier sensors bolt in. I just moved the 2002 grommets on the abs sensor wire to same position as 2005 wire so I could follow same wire routing and keep it tucked out of harms way.

ABS works 100%. No ABS light.

Switching from leaf to coil is way worth the effort!
Like night and day difference and well worth it. Anyone who tells you otherwise, doesn’t have a clue what they are talking about.

Awesome!! Thanks for the feedback!!

And I've seen another post where the guy welded 1/4" shims to his radius arm brackets. But he was doing this swap on an Excursion. Is that an Excursion frame thing? Are the front of the frames different between the Excursions and the 99-03 Super Dutys? Will I have to do anything like that to my 4wd 2000 F350?? Or will the brackets fit flush against my frame as-is?? Thank you again guys!!

Unboxed frame.

Great info fellas! I have all my parts together to do the swap.

I was talking to a buddy an he said he would be slightly concerned about the unboxed (c-channel) frame section were the shock tower will be installed on the 99-04. Just a concern.... by no means saying its going to fail. Since this year range does not carry the weight of the front end there and is dispersed on a leaf, I assume they saw no need to box this part of the frame. The 05+ sure enough has the frame boxed above the axle and around the shock tower. Has anyone who has been running the conversion for a while had any issues with this?.... cracks, bending, twisting?

thank you!

The newer frames are only gusseted right where the frame and rear of the engine cross member meet. The area where the coil/shock buckets mount is channeled just like the leaf spring trucks. They are both boxed in front of that (where the steering box mounts). I've only had my swap done for 8ish months but I have 2'000+ Baja miles on her. Just hauling ass over crappy roads and chasing/pitting in remote areas down there (didn't want to sound like I'm actually racing/prerunning this beast at race speeds lol).

ZERO regrets about the swap btw. Running 37s on the Carli 4.5" coils and caster adjustable LewisBuilt radius arms (bad ass units)....

I did this swap in 2004 to my 1999 V10 2wd.
I even changed v10 to crate03v10. and I made it 4wd all at the same time.
going from coil to coil 4wd was easy.
person (not Human) sold me the entire package and shipped it to me CA from Tx. he knew I had 4.30 rear
and this non human sent me 3.73 front. and a bad ecm. when I figured out the bad ecm went to my friend at recycler in SAC. he had good ecm installed it and in dirt lot I tried it out. Talk about shaking all the way.
Well truck had 225k miles on it from 99 so i figured just get a newer rear 3.73 got an 02 with 60k and did that swap in 4 hours the next day.

NOW I am finally going to change it back to 4.30's
I am in Fremont, CA if anyone near by wants to talk, pm me and i get back to you

Digging up an old thread here guys, so I apologize in advance, but while sourcing parts for this swap for my 2wd f350 I began to wonder about using the factory 2wd spring buckets that are already on my truck. I pulled some rough measurements today and it appears that the upper spring seat (when measuring from the bottom of the frame) is right at 2 inches lower than a 4wd bucket from a 2012 4wd. I’m curious has anyone tried this. In hypothetical thinking this would essentially be the same as using the 4wd bucket with factory 4wd coil along with a 2 inch leveling spacer. Any input on this is appreciated.

Mine was 2wd. 2wd buckets would not work - I cannot remember exactly but I think the 2wd spring is smaller diameter.

I did the same swap about 7 mos ago. I never put out pictures yet but I do have them. I didnt read carefully about the other swap but one difference I did notice was I used a 05 up steering box. It solved the pitman arm issue. To use the 05 up you need to change one steering line to the 05 up style. Also the 3 bolts need to be drilled out to 18mm I believe and you need longer bolts because the frame on the newer trucks indents in and allows for shorter bolts but the older frame is wider and the newer bolts are too short. Everything lines up perfectly though. I bought new coil spring mounts and new radius arm brackets and they all line up pretty nice with the stock holes. The track bar bracket required drilling out two holes if I remember correctly. I would def. not re use the old steering box as your not gaining the full amount of the swap. The new box is much quicker and responsive compared to the old box and matches well with the new suspension. Actually that was the first thinG I noticed about the truck when I drove it. I have been driving it for about 6 mos and love it. But me being the way I am I couldnt leave it alone so I made a 4 link for it and added 4.5" Icon springs. I will post a picture of the truck.
What was the exact power steering line you got as I swapped the box on my truck but now I'm stuck as to which line I need.
