I had the dealer install a reman HD 4R100 in my truck last week. All seems well with it, but I had one concern. Should they have installed an external filter? If so, where should it be because I'm not finding one.

Thanks, Bryce

Yes they should have installed a Magnefine (or equivalent) inline. The most common placement is in the return line just after it comes off the oil to air cooler. Slide under the front bumper on the passenger side of the license plate. Go back until you're staring up at the corner of the radiator. There should be two lines there - the filter should be in one of them. Its a black ribbed inline filter.

The instructions say to install it in the "rubber" part of the return line, over the front axle.

Looks like they skipped that and the sticker on my dipstick to inform you to use Mercon V. Argh. Just called them back and they are supposed to be finding my decal and why the filter kit was not put on.

Thanks guys.

Just curious...How much did the HD transmission cost you to have them install it?

So, the dealer is telling me that the inline filter is no longer installed. I'm going to call Ford Customer Service tomorrow about it and get the real story. If it's no longer installed, fine, I'm cool with that. If it is, I want it in, not just because it's something I was supposed to have, but I don't want any warranty issues. There better not be any warranty issues either way since a Ford dealer did the install.

Ya, stock factory one.
Too bad they didn't upgrade it to the 6.0 cooler. Much bigger and better in my opinion. :icon_wink:

If Ford says the in-line filter is no longer required...I would still put one in myself.
They are not expensive nor hard to install.

The dealer is correct; Ford no longer uses the inline filters.

As long as the cooler is flushed or replaced per Ford's instuctions, you'll be good with Ford

Thanks TousleyParts! that's what I needed to hear. Ford Customer Service was no help and told me to call another dealer... and here you are with an answer!

Thanks for the great deal on an overpriced rear seat cup holder for my truck the other day too! You guys were half of what everyone else wanted and even cheaper than some used I found.

I hald also sent an email to Ford at the same time I posted the original question and they finally got back to me:

Hello Bryce,

My name is Barnes from Ford's Customer Relationship Center, and I appreciate the time that you have taken to write us inquiring about installing an inline transmission fluid filter on your 2001 Ford F-250.

Please be informed that the filter is not used with all transmissions. *Some transmissions can have the cooler lines flushed and the cooler replaced which eliminates the need for the in-line filter. *With the 4R100 transmission, it is a separate transmission cooler and can be replaced. *With most replacements of a 4R100 transmission, the filter is not installed, but the cooler is replaced and lines flushed.

I hope we have provided you with a satisfactory answer.

Thank you so much for contacting Ford Motor Company.

Sincerely,
Barnes
