I bought a used engine with heads already removed. One of the 2 sleeves between block and head that head bolts slide though is crushed. What are their propose and how important to they be installed? I have not visited the dealer yet but it seems to be the only place to buy a replacement.

They are made to locate the correct location for the head on the block. Pretty important

Just so you ask for the right part, they're called locating dowels. Possibly a decent parts house would have a selection to chose from. I doubt if they're a dealer only item. Worst case, it wouldn't be hard to make some from the right size tubing.
