Hello everyone, i,am new here and need some help.
I have a 1997 250 PSD with auto transmission that blew the front tranny seal while backing a load of hay last weekend. I,am going to change the seal and the fluid and the filter.
I,am totally confused on which fluid to use, the dipstick say mercon.
I have heard not to use mercon v.
What do ya,ll recommend.
Thanks, Curtis

the best synthetic you can afford. I think it is usually around $100 just for the fluid. Do a search for trans fluid and see what pops up.

And the next time you back a large load put it in 4l with the hubs unlocked.

If you are 2wd? Not sure what to suggest.

You could probably just add a bigger cooler, change the fluid and filter, and leave the seal alone for now. They often puke all the fluid out that seal when they get too hot and then go back to normal after they cool. Granted, you could use a better seal in there, but you can probably wait until you really need to pull the tranny for bigger reasons.

Interesting........ I had heard about putting it in 4L..... but never heard about NOT locking the hubs..... does that just engage the transfer case????

yes jsut engage rear wheels at teh lower ratio, way easier on the tranny, if you change fluid and add a much bigger cooler you should be fine for a while

Any time I am backing a trailer I always use 4l. Everything happens slower. Plus you look like a hero when you get into tight spots with one shot due to the slow speeds v/s quick response.

Ditto what he said /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif.
The "NEW" mercon V has (assumedly) new spec and can be use now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

LOL. I always wonder how these young truckers that make deliveries at work got their CDL's, takes some of em a billion tries to get in the dock. Must not have had the same officer that we do in Scott City, hes a hard @$$, he fails most of em on the pretrip, let alone backing up your trailer, no way they could get em there.
