My truck yesterday stalled for the first time, I started back up and it didn't want to idle at first, then by the time I drove back out to the farm (from town) it idled fine. So I drove it some more then it died and I almost couldn't get it started. Then the last time it wouldn'r start at all. Then tried again this morning and it started right up. I think the RPM's are at 0 when trying to start (atleast they were yesteday the last time it died and I could get it started).

I took it to a shop to get the codes read and he said all that came up was 1218 nothing to do with the CPS. After it finally starts it runs just like it normally does. Usually it only quits when it idling down. Hasn't quit on me yet above 1500 rpm.

So CPS or not? Can it go bad and not throw a code? Anything else that can cause these symptoms?

thanks for your help

I had some similar problems (coupled with some other ones) in my -97. Bought a fuel pressure gage to continuously monitor the pressure. Going for a new fuel pump this weekend. Here in "the Bronx" (Bronx, New York), the "Carter" branded pump is offered from "Pep Boys Auto Parts" for $99 with a LIFETIME WARRANTY. Some of the other brands I found were about $10 cheaper, but only offered a one year warranty.

wrong, wrong, wrong.

I called back to get the part number of the "Carter" pump. I found that the person I'd originaly spoken with was mis-informed. The pump DOES NOT have a lifetime warranty, rather a 30 day one. I suppose I'll go with the $10 cheaper pump from "Autozone".

The AutoZone lifetime pump is the same Carter pump (they are all Carter pumps), but may be in a different brand box. Cheers!

It sounds to me like the cps is about to go out if your rpms were 0 while cranking.

I'll second the CPS diagnosis. I had one go out on my previous (2000) truck, and one on this truck and the symptoms are the same; truck cuts out inexplicably, then runs fine... then dies again... then runs fine... Just buy a new CPS, and keep the old one as a spare (or buy two and keep a second new one in the glovebox with a 10mm wrench). I bought one a few months ago on eBay for $60 or so; they're usually $100 or so at IH, and nearly twice that at the stealership. You might also try www.powerstrokeshop.com ; they're sponsors here, know their stuff, and sell OEM parts as reasonably as they can. Good luck.

Josh

PS: CPS is on the block at 9:00 or from the crank pulley; disconnect the wiring connector before trying to loosen the 10mm bolt and save yourself some new combinations of short words...

I agree, that the first thing to do is replace the CPS and it will usually not throw a code. Your symtoms are classic for a CPS failure.
