OK, I have just about had it…with myself, couldn't leave well enough alone..
Here is the issue, found that I had the burnt UVC wiring, and will get that fixed Monday, don’t see much of a problem there.

With the valve cover off, I “thought” (my first mistake…) that I would take one of the glow plugs out to see if they had ever been changed, and if they needed to be changed I would change them.
Shouldn’t be much of a job doing that… (Second mistake…)
Well I tried to take the easiest one to get to out but it did not turn very easy, and I'm afraid that I will twist it off. It is the one closest to the driver side battery.
I have it backed out about 2 turns, and instead of getting a little bit easier, its getting harder.
Tried to tighten it back in but its not any easier doing that either.
I sprayed some PB blaster on it. And….
Well here comes my first intelligent thought; I STOPPED what I was doing before I really screwed up things and made my truck un-drivable.
Hopefully the truck will run with a glow plug disconnected and backed out maybe (I do mean maybe) two turns.

I am thinking that maybe the heads will have to be pulled to get these things out. And that’s a job that I just don’t think I have the experience to tackle. I’ve never quite gotten this deep in a repair job.

My thoughts are to replace the UVC wiring, get this thing running and take it to a local shop and have them replace the glow plugs.
Wonder how much that will cost???

Does anybody have any advice for me at this point in time?

Thanks again all !!!

Was the engine warm or cold when you tried it?
The PB blaster is good stuff, give it some time, however, if the tip is swollen.....
I have heard of some getting a drill on them and twisting them untill they come out, but if it is stuck guess you gotta get it past the threads to do the drill trick.
Best of luck!

If by chance you get it put back in a ways, it might be a good idea to run some Sea Foam through the fuel system to clean the carbon off of them. Put some in the fuel bowl and the rest in the tank and drive it like ya stole it for a while. Cleans the carbon off and should make the job easier.

It was bone cold when I tried to change it. Truck had a burnt UVC wiring harness and wouldn't crank.

Thank!, that sounds like the way to go for now. I did get it to go back in a half a turn. One thing is for sure...it aint comming out!!!

I'm going to search the internet for this Sea Foam, but would a local truck (big rig) shop have something like that? I haven't ever heard of it.

BTW I have only had this truck for a little over a year and have learned much! from this forum. I just can't thank you guys too much,
you all are good people!

Thanks, all !!

Check the newest archives. There was a discussion about it on the very first page. Good reading material. And good luck.

I saw seafoam at either autozone or kragen awhile back. Marine (as in boating) stores often carry it.

I'm curious if there is build up on the injector or if the tip swelled. Wish you were closer, I'd pull the head for you just to get a look at the Veggie residue /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif If someone does pull it at some point get pics of the piston tops, heads, injectors, and glow plugs (please).

Hope this turns out well...

I've seen Sea Foam at Advance Auto Parts.
I've never used it, but was think about it in my car. Instructions say for gassers to suck half can thru vacuum line, like from brake booster and add rest to gas tank. Anybody do this? Anybody use it in thier stroke??

I use it every other oil change, one in each tank. I've had the glow plugs out 3 times with no issues. Don't know if it was from the SeaFoam or not but...

Sea Foam is available at most parts stores. Red and white can and should be by the Berrymans.

It is truly Magic what the stuff can do. I have always believed that most of those products are nothing more than snake oil....unitl I tried Sea foam. Good stuff. I have used it in gas vehilce (into the intake and tank) and I could tell an immediate difference. Boats....The motor will idle no as long as you want it to, it used to die when you were in neutral waiting to pick up a skier... motor get to pllaning speed faster too. My Powerstroke, in the tank, seemed like it added some cetane and idled smoother too.

It is 4.99 to 5.99 a can but well worth it.

Good luck,

Jay

Chances are it isn't coming out. I had a similar problem with a stuck glowplug tried everything at least you were smart enough to stop when you did. Put an ohm meter to it to see if it is working otherwise head has to come off. The only issue is some smoke on start up during cold weather operations. The glowplug system is a weak link with the powerstroke. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I got two cans of Sea Foam, put one in the tank, and the other one in the fuel bowl.
Ran it like I stole it. I'll run this tank out and maybe another one with the Sea Foam.
In my other post I had to change the UVC harness. That is what lead to this mess./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
The pin that was burnt went to the glow plug that I couldn't get out.
I tested the resistance of the stubborn glow plug and it read 1.5 ohms on my fluke meter, not much, seems shorted to me.
So I did not connect the wire up to that glow plug, thought it maybe would burn up my new harness./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif
Hope thats OK??

Let me know if there is anything I have left out or that I should do.
Thanks for everyones help!!!

If you get to the point you want to try running w/o glow plugs at all, I have a little cold start experiment going from last year. Put a 100k Potentiometer into one of the EOT sensor leads. At 0k, EOT reading is used by the engine. As you add resistance from the POT, it tricks the engine into seeing colder than actual oil temps, so it increases the timing and fuel. HERE is my post from the recent archives, EOT cold start mod.
