This is a follow up to my other post..

My husband is planning on attempting to install the IP himself tomorrow or the next day ..

Can someone give him an idea if this is a job he might be able to do himself, with a limited supply of tools?

He has mechanic expereince, but its been a while and again.. he has very limited tools.

Is there a special tool required for this job?

We are borrowing money as is to fix up the truck, and we are going through a layoff a money is very tight...not sure if we can afford to take it to a diesel shop or not.. but would for sure like to save the $ if we can.

If your mechanically incline, then it's not a problem changing the injection pump yourself.

Here's the critical part,

DO NOT LOOSEN OR REMOVE THE TIMING GEAR COVER FOR THE IP !!!!!!!

If the timing gets off, then it's a bear to get it back in time.

Do search of the threads and you'll find plenty of info on how to change it out without messing it up.

Good Luck

Do not remove the IP gear cover. Do not loosen the 2 bolts that hold the IP gear cover down.

The bolts that hold the IP to the gear are found behind the oil fill tube.
3 nuts hold the IP to the gear cover.
The clamps on the fuel lines need to be reinstalled.
Many write-ups on this site about bleeding the lines.
I don't know what you are paying for a used pump, but a rebuilt pump from Midwest fuel injection service is $431.57. It is a shame to do this job for a used pump.
You should have the dynamic timing set after installing the pump.
If you post you location there may be someone local that is willing to help.

Talk is cheap on the internet. Not being negative, but without having a clue regarding your husband's ablilty, it's impossible to say whether he should undertake it or not. There's been quite a few self-proclaimed experts here that got in over their head halfway through the job and had to be bailed out. First off, not mentioned above, he needs a 12 point 3/8" drive 5/16" socket (which most guys don't have) to remove the pump drive from its drive gear. Then he needs the proper combination of end wrenches, or a specially bent box end to remove the bottom (hard to get at) pump housing bolt.

With that said, if your husband has removed and reinstalled an intake manifold on an old Chev or Ford gas engine in the past, then R&Ring the IP will be a piece of cake, it's easier, quicker and cleaner.
Joe Mc sums it all up well, especially regarding the pump gear housing.
If you're installing a used pump and it doesn't work out and you need a rebuilt, you most always get a better job and a lower price by taking your pump into a local fuel injection pump/turbo shop and having it rebuilt there, rather than from the off the shelf rebuild outfits.
On Edit:
After reading your other post, you guys may be on the right track. Years ago friends had 6.9s with your same symptoms, and our local IP guy later told me there was a plastic or nylon component in the pump that breaks. Guys here have run into the same thing.

Thanks for the feedback.. I am having him read this all this morning.

As for the tools.. he has the one listed.. but not the "bent" one..

As for the comments on the new/used/rebuilt IP.. this used IP is our only option right now.

Lets see here.......

1000 in fuel
1300 in hotel and food cost
1000 in labor

How does a case of beer and home made deer jerky sound. :jester:

Or better yet I could come out there and do some landscaping in return.

Sorry, no cats, got bit by one and gave me cat scratch fever one time (seriously), don't hate them, but don't like them either. I never thought that Ted Nugent was actually singing about a real infection.
