I'm about to purchase a fairly large compressor (7 HP/80gal vertical, approx 550lbs) that is on a pallet. Presumably, they will use a forklift to put it on my pickup bed.. but how the heck do I get it off the bed when I get home?!?

Rent or borrow a trailer ?
You chould then drag the pallet around

Or pay them to have it delivered.

It's allot of weight to pick up and remove from the bed without a
forklift.

Or if you could drive under a beam in the Garage, use a chain fall to
lift it, and then drive out from under it ?

I'd thought of the chainfall/come-along thing (I rebult engines in a former life), but really didn't want to spend the $.

I'm not sure how a trailer helps.. it still has to be taken off the trailer (even with a loading ramp, moving something that heavy on a skid/pallet ain't happening.

Please explain.

Thanks!

On a trailer, once your home you just need to tilt the pallet
and then set it back down on moving dolly's (you can rent, borrow or buy them)

You could roll the pallet over round poles

or just hook a rope around the pallet and drag it
I'm guessing the Cf would be .5, so your really dragging 280 pounds.

or even try walking the pallet
tip it back and then side to side

I'll try to answer all of these at once:

I'm in Mooresville, NC.

This is 550-600lbs, not 250-300lbs, so the idea of tipping it scares the crap out of me. I don't know that I could "walk" it. Dragging it once on the ground can be accomplished, but getting it on the ground is still the biggest challenge. An engine hoist/cherry picker won't get high enough, even with my low landscape trailer (certainly not in the bed of the pickup).

It sounds like renting a forklift or using a chainfall/come-along are probably my best bets.

Thanks for the help guys. If y'all have any more ideas, keep 'em coming!

Put down a couple of ramps. Chain the ramps to the hitch and pull the pallet off.

I pull pallets off with my atv winch and have, in the past, tied the load to a tree and drove slowly off.

The ramps stay with the truck and the load slides off nicely.

DO NOT FORGET TO CHAIN THE RAMPS TO THE TRUCK... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The rear ramp type yard trailer with a pallet jack is the way to go. You can roll it down the ramp. Pallet jacks are easy to borrow or rent. Mini forklift right there.

Or perhaps you got a bank you could get the truck backed up to and somehow use a pallet jack to lift the pallet and roll it off? Not as easy but still...

Pallet jack... that the ticket.

Not that hard. If it's 600 pounds then you need to split that weight in half. You need 2 strong guys of maybe 3, no more. Tip it on it's side, heavy side to the front of the truck. After this the hard part is over. When you tip you'll only be tipping about half the weight. Then slide if off the end of the truck. While you're letting down one side the truck is holding up the other half for you. Then let id done on a 4 wheel dolly or something and you are done. Just a little physics with some help from your truck.

Good Luck,
Rob

I've seen trailers for rent around here that have a built in pallet jack. Most of the places I have seen them are at stone yards (they use them so customers can deliver their own pallet of stone). You might see if you can find anything like that at a trailer rental place.

FWIW I have an engine hoist that I have used to hoist longblocks up and over the tailgate of my F250. It cleared it by a longshot. The combo of a trailer and borrowing/renting a hoist would easily get the job done.

I would have them lay a pallet down on the bed and have them lay the tank on the pallet. take off the tailgate and slide the compressor out and down leaving most of the weight on the bed untill the palletthat it is mounted on is on the ground and then slide it around. But that would be to easy for most of you.
