long story short, recently got home from a trip that was about 1000 miles round trip. I had noticed some oil splattering on the underside of my bed, leading me to believe it is a bad pinion seal. brought it to the dealer, and they had said the pinion bearing was bad and had play in it and quoted me $1500 to replace it. Now I just heard back and they are telling me that it needs a whole new rear end rebuild... Im a younger guy (23) driving a nice truck, that I work my butt off for, I feel like they are trying to take advantage of me thinking its mommy and daddys money they will be getting.

What are your guys thoughts on this? and if the rear end does need to be done, whats the difference from doing it now or just getting it to stop leaking and drive it until it actually goes out?

Just need some opinions, y'all are probably way more educated in this subject than I am.
Appreciate any feedback

Need some more details, what year truck, configuration, etc.(I.E. 2015 Crew Cab Short Bed F250 XLT Fx4)

My inclination would be that they are trying to rip you off, rear ends RARELY fail, especially if you are not towing heavy. Ask for proof of the rear end damage...

Also, you can contact Crystal (username FordService) here, she can help with your case.

2012 f350 lariat crew cab short bed, with 86k miles I bought the vehicle used, so i do not know its history. It does not appear to have been used for any towing, no wear on tow hooks or hitch. but I havent heard any noise from the rear end indicating any damage.. just a few drips of oil on the driveway.

My experience has been that if a rear end has failed you will know it, because you wont be driving any more. If it is showing signs of wear they should be able to easily take you out into the bay and show it to you.

At this point I would be demanding to see proof, if they dont want to show you then time to get Crystal( Diesel Forum - TheDieselStop.com - View Profile: FordService ) involved, and maybe find a new dealer...

I wont be able to get to the dealer to really look.. I asked for some pictures of it, but they could definitely fake those. I will probably just pay them for their time and take it else where. From what the mechanic had said over the phone was that there was water contamination in the differential and the whole thing would need to be redone. I just don't really believe what hes telling me at this point.

and yes, i've never had a rear end go out while ive been driving, but I have heard it in our work vehicles enough to know that you are quite aware once it is bad. Just a shame you can't really trust many people/business's now a days. Thats the main reason I used to do the work myself, but my new job does not really allow that anymore.

Is there another dealer you can take it to? I know in my town there is a dealer, but I dont trust them AT ALL, when I still had a warranty on my 7.3 I would pay good $$ to have it towed an hour from me just to keep it away from my in town dealer...

Have you priced a replacement rear from your local wrecking yard or ebay? Might be cheaper in the long run and give service as good as the repairing yours.

Hi Bschwan350,

Let's see what I can do to assist. Are you working with your local Ford Dealership? I'll start looking into some options.
