I need help... the parking lights on my '95 are stuck on. I pulled the #4 fuse and pulled out the headlight switch and they're still on... does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look for the short?

Thanks,
Joe

When you say "pulled out" I hope you mean removed, otherwise just push it back in. If it's the park lights I wouldn't panic, shouldn't kill the batteries super fast. Might try a search.

Yes, completely removed the switch from the truck... LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I also tried searching, but couldn't find anything.

After another half hour of troubleshooting I found the problem, it ended up being the trailer light relay (number 4 in the underhood box) stuck closed and backfeeding the truck's lights. Pulled the relay and all is well.

Ok, spoke too soon... parking lights are off, but the relay isn't the problem.

Swapped the relay with the one for the horn and it does the same thing.

Then I lost the stoplights/turn signals and the ABS light started flashing. Shut the truck down to come back in and the hazards (which I turned on while troubleshooting but weren't working) started working and now the stop/turn lights work fine...

I HATE electrical gremlins...

Any suggestions? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Yes, seen it on MANY of those year Fords.

Check the actual headlight switch. It is known to short out right at the switch. Lots of times it's obvious by way of burned plastic etc.

If that's it, you need an updated(new) switch and make sure all the wires are well insulated and throw it back together.
I can get more specific info if you need, my cousin has fixed a bunch of these.

Switch was fine, no melting at all. The wiring to the switch didn't look to have any damage either but I didn't dig deeper into the harness. Put everything back together and here's the symptoms currently:

Lights work fine with the trailer light relay out.
With trailer light relay in, turn on lights and once switched off, the parking lights stay on.
Pull the relay and they go off, put it back in and they stay off until the lights are turned on again. Switched relays and same symptoms.
Same symptoms with or without trailer connected.

Turn signal/ brake light/ABS light issue hasn't reoccurred.

Any other suggestions?

OK try turning on your lights shut them back off if lights stay on then disconnect the light switch lights should go off hook the switch back up lights should stay off if they do I still say your switch is bad kinda like a turnsignal flasher when they go bad they stick on till the power is shut off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

As long as the trailer relay is pulled out, the truck's lights work fine, no issues at all. It's only when the relay is in that the problem shows up. When the lights are stuck on and I unplug the headlight switch, they stay on. If I pull the parking light fuse in the underdash panel when they're stuck on they stay on. The only thing that shuts them off is pulling the trailer relay.

I'm assuming that there's a short somewhere that is keeping the relay energized and therefore backfeeding the truck's lights.

Next I'm going to disconnect the trailer connector and see if that changes anything.

oh Ok now I see whats happening yep start at the trailer plug then work your way back towards the power supply checking any place your trailer lights harness could tie in with your parking lights

The OP of this thread described several problems, and several corrections & changes to them.

I have the exact same Problem on my 97. I think I narrowed my fault to the Keyless Entry Box. If my lights are stuck on and I tap that box the lights will go out. I also have an issue with the Tail Lights intermittently not working and I think it’s also related to that box. I haven’t had the time to source another one yet to try to fix the issue.

I also have another problem with my trailer plugs not operating and I don’t know if they also go through that box.

Keep all your tech questions here in the forum.

This shows the head & parking lights:

The trailer wiring is shown in the 2nd diagram above, but it might be slightly different on your pickup. This link requires an e-mail, but it doesn't have to be your real e-mail:
BBB Industries | TSB's & Wiring Diagrams
When you see WIRING DIAGRAMS, click it.

For max resolution, click the image on the SuperMotors page until it's not clickable.

I can't help you without specific details. "Sometimes they don't" is about as vague as can be. When (after what happens to the truck)? How often? What's abnormal about the lights, specifically?
