Hey guys, I need your help...

I have a 2001 F-350 7.3, I made it home from work last night with no problem, didn't notice any lack of power or sputtering at all. I went to go into town & it would turn over but not fire. I was in a hurry so I took an alternative vehicle. Upon my return an hour and a half later, I turned it over, longer than normal (about 15seconds) it fired, ran for about 20 seconds and than died. I then turned it over again, this time it fired right up, I rev'd it up to about 2k and held it there for 30 seconds or so, then let off and it idled for about 10 seconds then died again. 2-3 more times & it just wont idle. Feels like it's lack of fuel, the service engine soon icon would come up when it died, then go away when it started. I'm hoping it's just a fuel filter, but any input would be much appreciated.

CPS?? (Cam Position Sensor??) When it turns over but won't start look at the Tach. If the Tach is NOT moving when you try and start it, good clue it's the CPS. They WILL go out overnight!!

If the check engine light came on, then it set a code. That will tell you where to start the search. A standard OBDII code reader will NOT work on our trucks. You must use a Ford diesel compatible scanner or take it to a shop that can do this service.

Check the oil to the HPOP reservoir. There's a a cap that uses an allen wrench to open it. Check the level of the reservoir. It should be roughly 1/2' to 3/4" from the top. If it's not, fill it up with oil, replace cap, and try turning it over again. I've dealt with this problem several times in the past.

Any update Big Perm? I noticed you only registered today and made that only post. I hope you just didn't come on here to get help and take off. Please let us know if any of our suggestions worked or not so that others may know.

Update: Thanks for the ideas guys! I went to the local dealer & got a CPS for $27.95 & a new fuel filter. I will start there and keep my fingers crossed...

And yes, I did just join today but I'm not going anywhere. I belong to a few "other" boards and in my research today I found this one to be much more helpful, with a lot more traffic. Thanks for all the help, I will update tomorrow.

Welcome to the site Big_perm! I think you'll find that this place will get you all you need. It's a great place.

Pocket,
Can you recommend a Ford diesel compatible scanner? I just had to bring my truck into the shop because I don't have a scanner. I HATE when that happens.

I noticed that the AE is mentioned in a few threads, but I couldn't find anything on the web about it.

Many thanks,

Any used Superchip programers made for our trucks will read your codes, so will most other programers, Mak tools scanners along with Snap On scanners will also read them. With MAK and Snap On you may have to buy something to add on, not sure.
To the OP I bet on CPS, although I am not a fan of replacing parts to fix a problem a spare CPS is something all PSD owners should carry with them in the glove box, so if this doesn't fix the problem at least you have a spare.

The SES will come on "When it dies" If that is what he meant.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif Now if it came on while it was running and then died,, there should be code/codes then yes.
Does it idle really rough before it dies? OR shut down like you turned the key off? If it gets real rough and loud, it sounds like a fuel starvation issue, The fuel pumps on these are known to go out often enough to keep that in mind too, (Not a "Shotgun part though!" at almost 300.00 from FORD. (Not sure I would go aftermarket, heard of some of the "Cheapos" failing too fast for me,,, What good is a lifetime warranty if you have to replace it every two years? Not what I would want to do,,,especially if it could strand you and your family along the road.

Also on the 01 I don't think the " 200 rpm Tach trick" works for the CPS,, 99 and 2k yes, but they changed the programming for some odd reason,,(Maybe keep us from diagnosing our own CPS problems??/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Can't imagine any other reason they would take that out,,/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif) anyway I think in -01 is when that stopped working, I could be wrong, maybe it was 02. But keep that in mind when your working on it, if the tach DOES NOT move, it MAY not be the CPS still on your truck.

The same thing happened to my truck and it ended up being a short in the wiring harness under the valve cover.

Let us know what you find....

It turned out being the CPS... I did the fuel filter first and started it up & it ran for a couple of minutes as I did my victory dance, then died again. Replaced the CPS & it runs like a top. Thanks for all the help, this board saved me a lot of time & money. Now I can go back to where I belong (differentials). Thanks again!!!

Throwing a new CPS at a no start at $27 isn't nearly as painfull as it was at $180 (what I paid the dealer for my first one). Of coarse I bought 2 spares off Ebay for $100 and $50. I don't guess anyone want to buy them for what I have in them, do they?
