Recently I noticed a small drip of oil under my truck after a long trip. Looked everywhere for the leak, and then decided to pull the intake out all the way to the turbo inlet. I noticed that where I installed the HX hose fitting (part that is in rail) that a part of the o-ring was sticking out passed the fitting. I took it off and sure enough it was torn. I went and bought some o-rings, put one on everything looked good, drove it last night. Got up today and saw a small drip again. Looked at the fitting, o-ring was showing again. So im off for more o-rings, but does this thing need to be tightened all the way down, just snug or?

I used teflon tape on on both side of the threaded fittings. I also lightly oil the o-rings before I screw the fitting into the heads so I wouldn't tear the o-ring as I tightened it down.

If the o-ring is coming out from under the fitting, it sounds like the fitting isn't seating properly or tight enough. You might want to check the fitting and the rail for debis or anything else that might be preventing the fitting from seating. I don't remember a torque for the fitting in the instructions, but the factory oil line gets tighten to 19 ft lbs. I would imagine the HX fitting would be about the same torque.

I had the exact problem. You likely need a new o-ring. Take the old o-ring to a True value or Ace hardware and get a replacement. Make sure you put a little oil on the o-ring before you tighten the fitting. Oil leak fixed.

Just thought of something else. If where the o-rings sets on the rail has rust it may be causing the o-ring to tear. Take some real fine sand paper (like a 400 or 600 grit) and make it smooth. Protect the opening so nothing gets in the thread hole.

OK I didn't read your entire post. I don't think there was a torque spec. If I remember correctly you tighten around a half turn past contact. I'll serch through my installation instructions and see what is required for the HX mod.

A standard oring is not correct for an oring boss fitting. They will last for a while and then pop out just like you described.

Any hydraulic shop should sell the correct oring, the cross section and durometer is different than a standard oring.

Also never use thread tape on an O-ring fitting. It's pointless as far as leaks go and a piece of can end up where it doesn't belong.

I would agree with all that and they even have a special O-ring lubricate to prevent pinching/tearing of boss type orings ... maybe you don't need that, but there is a "correct way" and then a "might or might not work" way of doing things. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Just because the oring looks right there are several dimensions for a boss oring to fit properly.

Forget torque and turns...just crank the fitting in the head TIGHT. Don't be shy put some muscle on it. You must use the proper O-rings too. Here are the Ford & IH part numbers: F4TZ-9N693-A & 1815874C1

OK, I took the stock plug/oring and found some o-rings that were exactly the same size by eye/measurement. What I was trying to do was use too thick of an o-ring, and yes it was tearing upon tightening. The new o-ring I put in actually went down in the hole and I got it completely tight and you could not see any of it where before it was always sqeezing through. Leak is fixed for now, but if it comes back I will just get the ford part.

Thanks,
Ricky
