Well here's the problem when i'm loaded up 10.5 camper, pulling 18ft trailer loaded approx. 6000lbs pulling a long grade and the pyro temps get around 725 and up but never exceeding 850-875 i get this very high pitched squeel.Back off the throttle it dies down put your foot back in it comes back up.Once you crest the hill and cruise for a mile or two and the pyro temps come back down 550-600 approx.noise goes away.It seems you've got to be into the hill for a couple of miles and the temps over 725 for a bit before the squell comes on,while doing this though there's no loss of power truck pulls real strong, what do you think??(TURBO ON THE WAY OUT??)

Same problem here. Only when I'm pulling my 5th wheel (36 ft) up hills. No loss of power either but mine sounds like a fan running real real fast (whirling) but cannot imagine a fan under the hood could be this loud. I've seen some posts that claim its the fan kicking in for cooling but mine goes away right after I top the hill generally and sometimes just before if I don't put my foot in it. Honestly I don't know anything about these engines but if it really is the fan for cooling why would it go off so quickly (atleast in my case). It seems to me if the engine or tranny was too hot the fan would have to run for a while to cool all that fluid down.

Auto Jim any ideas?

Mine does the same on grades but I'm at 1000 and above is your pyro post turbo? I think it is either my boost gauge or it's the connection where the EGR pipe couples to the EGR cooler sucking air. I ordered a snubber from diesel innovations to put in line on the boost I'll let you know after I install it and go on a trip.

Mine does the same thing pulling my 10,000lb 5ver on long hard grades, anything over 2500rpm. My theory is that it is the surpintine belt or either the fan clutch. I drove 6000 miles across the country and it did it in the first 300 miles and a couple times after that. I'm not going to worry about it.

If my truck were making the noise you are describing under the desciption you provided I would focus my attention to all my CAC boots, and check them for proper fit, and torque. If need be removing them, cleaning any oily residue inside and out then reinstalling them.
Some oil in the CAC sytem is normal. CAC= charged air cooling.

My truck makes the same sound.... but I have to be really working the motor to make it do it..... I have to be pulling my 37' 5er up a good grade for a little bit. I'm pretty sure its something to do with the fan. The CAC couplings is interesting though.... I just put a banks IC on my truck.... so I will see if the truck still does it.

There is TSB 05-21-9 Whine/Whistle Noise 6.0L dated 10/12/05

Basically this is for the EGR cooler leaking at the exhaust Y-pipe or the EGR connection to the intake manifold. Will occur during periods of high exhaust back pressure if leaking at one or both of the joints.

Doesn't say anything about having to be under heavy load though.

I don't think mine is a boost/exhaust leak.... it seems to cycle.... on for 15 seconds, off for 15 seconds.... like a fan

Mine did the exact same thing. When pulling a long hill and temp comes up and the fan locks in at one to one, the high pitch squeal started. Usually when this happens under high load and torgue and heat it turns out to be the belt. Well, I bought a new belt and when i changed it, I noticed that i had to pull the tensoiner back farther then when i took the old belt off. One other thing i noticed is that on the smooth faced pullys i had rubber built up. I took some scuff pads and cleaned them up. So far so good no squeeling or high pitched noises on long hard pulls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

bersa45,

Can you tell me what you had to remove from the radiator/fan area in order to access the surpentine belt? Has it that difficult to do? You can PM me if you'd like.

Thanks-

Mastercraft, you don't have to pull anything off to change the belt. I thought the samething until you really look at it. Start off leaning over the right or passenger side battery and reaching down with a 1/2 inch rachet using the ratchet to release the tensoiner. Take the belt from alternator first, then go under take the belt off the crank and A/C unit, then you pull the belt out through the Alternator and tensioner, working it through the rest of the pullys. It all came out from the right battery side. It is a little tricky, make sure you have the diagram for your set up. I have only one alternator. Have fun

Bersa.... what brand of belt did you install?

I would get that checked. My '05 did the same thing and after 5 quarts of antifreeze to get home and a trip to the dealer, I found out that the head bolts had stretched and the heads were no longer sealing. The high pitched squeel was excess pressure in the cooling system. This also caused my truck to overheat when pulling my 13,000 lb. 5er. Watch your temp and get it in if you have problems.
