with a chip or tuner , What power levels are safe for towing? Is there a difference for pulling around town? or highway passing? or heavy duty in the mountains? I can pretty much assume not to pull on a 100hp or more level but what about 60 or 80 hp levels? and at what times, ( above mentions scenarios ), is it safe to use this power? Thanks, Aaron

BTW its an '05 F550 6.0 5speed auto pulling 18k pounds.

Really depends on load. Under heavy enough loads, stock on a long enough hill at high speed will overheat it. Get yourself a pyro so you can monitor it. 100HP with a good pipe should be ok for a lot of heavy applications, just not all. Your pyro will tell you when to back off.

I'd say Be careful Racing your Load up Hill!If You try and kill it 75-85mph stock it's gonna Puke No matter stock or Not it will just take a few Miles!Add Power and that Time Decreases significantly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

all depends how you drive and watch your guages, i have the SCT with tadd's insanity tune, which is rated at i don't know lol, but i am making 423 hp with my dually, and i tow anything. Last night i pulled 21K up a few small hills around here at 55-60 and did not go above 1000egt's. I love that tune, so it all depends on how you drive and watch youstuff..

I do not use cruise control because it will dial too much HP in to keep up. I just watch the EGT and coolant temp and control it myself.

If your main focus is pulling then you need something adjustable in the cab. Combine this with a pyrometer gauge and you will be able to pull without any worries. IF it starts getting hot you can turn it down or off. Once you learn how to pull with the added power you should have no problem working the pedal and pulling on 100hp or so.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys, So it looks like I just need to watch my temps on everything all the time and dont be stupid about it. What is a normal egt to be running at on the highway while towing? and what is the max egt I should see during acceleration under load?

Mine pulls at 900-1000 all the time with stock or SCT tow. It creeps up to 1100-1150 on large hills but I back out over 1000, no need the EGR starts heating the coolant up...
