Being in Tx we do not get too much of the cold weather. It was about 30 this morning and I went out early (lots of frost) to start her up to warm her up. No problem on the start up. Just some white smoke. I let it run for approx. 15 minutes to get warmed up. It was not really in the warm range as I started to drive. The truck did not want to shift through 1st and 2nd. Revving and bogging down then finally shifting. I had a good 1:45 minute drive into work. Even after cruising all that time at 60 mph, I would still hear a slight hissing sound in the cab, the engine would sound muffled and it was bogging down. Then suddenly it would surge back to normal accelleration. (Occurred when I had to slow then speed up again, not during cruise) When I got to the employee lot I decided to rev it up a little. Sure enough at about 1500 rpm, what I described above would happen and the tach would drop to almost 1100 or 1200. When I pressed it harder it would clear up and rev up as it should. Any thoughts? Vacume lines? Fuel geling? I am kinda stumped. Thanks, TOM

EBPV Sticking maybe ? Clogged Tube from manifold to EBP sensor ? Check Fuel pressure and maybe FPR screen is full of crap

Sorry, I am an abbreviations-tard. What do EBPV, EBP and FPR mean? I can probably figure it out close. Something with engine and valve, fuel pressure regualtor screen? Where are these bad boys located for reference? Thanks, TOM

EBPV= Exhuast Back Pressure Valve, located on the exhuast discharge side of the turbo (butterfly valve)

EBP= Exhuast Back Pressure, 1/4' steel tubing from the passenger exhuast manifold to the EBP sensor mounted on the front of the engine just slightly right of the altenator

FPR= Fuel Pressure Regulator, located on the right side of the fuel filter/water seperator housing. it has a fine screen that can get clogged with trash

AWESOME! Thanks for spelling it out for me. More to follow.....

Are the things listed to check things that are common in cold weather, or do they affect the truck just about any time? I ask because it only seems to happen in cold weather.

The EBPV is designed to, at a certain temperature (oil temp IIRC) to activate (close) the butterfly in the flange, on the exhaust side of the turbo. The purpose is to aid in bringing the engine up to operating temp quicker. If the butterfly housing (EBPV flange) is caked with carbon, it could cause the "sticking" issue blaguert suggested.

The tube I'm not so sure about. The reason it clogs is from excessive carbon build up in the tube... I've heard it's from "dirty" fuel. Pre ULSD.

The FPR screen can get clogged if your injector O-rings are deteriorating. If the FPR screen is clogged (with a black gunk), your next step is to order a set of O-rings to replace them... The fuel in your fuel bowl should also have a blackish tint if that's what's causing the screen clog. Depending on the age of the glow plugs when you do this task, you may want to buy a new set of ZD-11's (94-02 glow plug part numbers) and replace them while you have the valve covers off.

I'll quit now, while I "think" I'm ahead!

HTH's (hope that helps)

Again great info. Sounds like you all may have it narrowed down. I will be able to check it tomorrow. The problem is the TX weather. It was in the low 30's when I went to work 4 days ago. Now, it is in the 70's. I hope I get some cold weather again so I can test it out once I check and clean. Thanks guys.

most have un-plugged the wire harness to the EBPV. i did. no need for it really, unless it's converted into a exhaust brake. but that's another story.

you may also want to remove the Fuel Heater located in the filter/water seperator housing. this has been know to cause "electrolysis" and corrode the housing at the bottom mostly, eventually leavin a hole for all the fuel to leak from.
i travelled 5 miles and lost 1/2 tank of fuel because of this. the motorist behind me, well they were not happy about raw diesel fuel on their cars
