The Homebrewer's guide mentions the use of a household water filter for a final filter. I don't recall any posts on this. Has anyone tried it? Any input on it, good, bad?
Thanks.

I wouldn't use it, seems that it would clog up too soon for me. I use a sock filter (nominal .5 micron filter) its 7" x 32". I hang it up in my shop and it drains into my "final" tank.
Works fine for me, as I have the room to do that. Some people don't have the room. They make a shorter 15" sock filter too. I am out of the office now in a cramped hotel room, or I would give the address of the company I purchased them from. I think they were 7 or 8 bucks, but I had to buy $50 min. order. PM me if you would like the information.

I have a whole house filter on my WVO pump, if its worm out i can filter the WVO out of the dumpster, into my 55 gal barrel in back of my truck. There is a by pass lever too so if its cold out i can just pump away. Once home i heat the oil in the 55 gal, and transfer off my truck to another 55 gal. "filtering it" . then from that 55gal to my holdiing tank "200gal" The whole house filters kits are like 45$ or so and the filters can be cheap if look around and catch them on sale,, buy by case in 5 to 20 micron size. i just allways use 5. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Although I don't like the mess or the time dumping the oil in in batched, I have been using closed denim jean legs inside a 7X16 1 micron filter (about $3.25 each in lots of 10 with S&H for me ) from Mcmaster Carr - do a web search and search for bag filters at the site.
It works but I hope to swithc to cleaner more hands off method .

I've been using a whole house filter down to 5 micron and have had no problems. Probably run about 200 gals before I change the filter.

For biodiesel use, a household water filter works great on the final biodiesel product (we're talking about the under-cabinet types or whole house, rather than somethign like a Brita pitcher of course) . For filtering oil, it clogs pretty fast unless you use a very slow pump and progressive filtration starting with very coarse filters.

also, dont' use the clear housing- use the type with a blue housing ,if you're going to filter biodiesel. the clear acrylic (?) housing falls apart because it's attacked by biodiesel.
