I am shopping for a powerstroke excursion. I've been looking for a 2000 because they should be the least expensive, but I'm finding several '01s with similar miles for the same price. Seems silly to buy an older model for the same price, but should I be scared of '01 trannies with the mechanical diode?
I'm looking at trucks from 90-120k miles. It will not be a daily driver and will mostly be used to tow my 4x4s with my family. Trailer weight will be mostly around 6000 pounds. But I do plan to add a tuner, gauges, exhaust, and maybe additional mods over time.

thanks,
david

TSB 01-13-05 does include the Excursion, E-Series, F-Series, as well as a couple other vehicles with the 4R100 with a transmission build date between 7/27/2000 and 3/23/2001.

As for what I did with the mechanical diode, a local trans shop quoted me about 300 bucks for just replacing the mechanical diode. By the time I finished with some other trans upgrades like a valve body, pump kit, seals, some clutch packs that were going, and a Precision converter, my bill was about 1100 bucks. All that was with me removing and bringing the transmission into them. The parts to replace the diode only run about $200. Now I feel very confident that with good maintenance that the trans should last for a long time in my 01.

I've got an 01 7.3 with an auto as one of my work trucks and it used to be my truck. It's got 170K on the orig. tranny and works like a champ. Of course my main supervisor uses it but it's pulled a 2000lb. trailer everyday for about 110K now.

fj45456040 FWIW,
Mark Kovalsky put my mind at ease about my mechanical diode.

This my interchange with Mark Kovalsky in 2002. I considered Mark a true expert.

Mark's post:
"No, it was just the early 2001s. Didn't I mention above that there was a running change in 2001 to go back to the older design? No 2002 truck will have this problem. And most of the 2001s won't, either.

Of those that have the mechanical diode it doesn't mean you will have a failure. Most of them are just fine. It's a relatively small number that had a problem, but it was too high to keep producing them, so Ford went back. If you have one, and it hasn't failed yet, chances are it never will fail.

My Post:
Mark,
I have the mechanical diode in my 2001. Until some vey recent posts I have felt comfortable with my transmission because of your comment in your post in this thread that "If you have one, and it hasn't failed yet, chances are it never will fail." Do you still believe this emphatically or has any new information come to you to make you change your opinion? I hope that for my comfort that you are able to hold the same opinion that you expressed last in your post June 25, 2002.

Thanks,
Paolo

Marks's post
"I haven't seen anything to make me change what I said last June."

My post and my last worry about the MD:
Thanks for the information Mark. I will take your opinion to the bank.
Paolo

Mine and some other's experience with the MD seems to bear Mark's opinion out as true.

Buddy and Casey are correct. I had recalled some bad info. Thought it was only in the F Series. I stand corrected.
