Hi! I have posted about the Oil leak on my 1990 Ford F350 4x4 7.3L IDI diesel and have gotten wonderful responses but now I have noticed the water pump will need to be replaced. I want to do this by myself and was wondering what you guys think would be the best water pump to put on (performance wise/price) and if it took any special tools to put on the truck (other than the basic ratchet and sockets etc..)? Thank you!

You'll need the big wrenches to remove the fan. I think you can rent them at Autozone. I don't know if oem or aftermarket would make a difference in water pump quality. One other thing. You need to make sure you put the four center bolts back in the same place, and you need to use sealant on the bolt threads. Tim

You will need two special wrenches as stated usually available from Azone if you get the pump from them. One wrench goes on the pulley bolts the other on the fan clutch nut. Major point is this is a LEFT HAND THREAD nut so it is righty loosy lefty tighty.......

Sent you a pm........

Just finished doing mine. Got the pump from auto zone for 50.00 lifetime warranty, 70.00 from international, 90+ from ford. Auto zone rents the wrenches, but you get your money back when you return them. Good time to flush the engine and add your block drains.

I got the autozone wrenches and they did not work. The metal was too thin and it kept slipping off the nut. I ended up going to harbour freight and getting a 1-7/8 combination wrench and I made a holder for the fan pulley with a flat piece of metal with a two holes to bolt to the fan pulley. Make sure you get all the gasket material off the flange and seal the 4 long bolts that go into the water jacket. I think there are two on top and two on the bottom.

I don't know about buying a rebuilt anything from AZ. I'll tell you why. Their water pumps may be fantastik. I don't know. But, I just got done putting the fifth starter in my sons car in the last nine months. Electrically speaking, the car is sound. First one lasted about a week. second, about 1 1/2 months. The third was bad out of the box, but didn't realize it until I installed it. Needless to say, but they all get bench tested from here on out. Fourth, an amazing 6 1/2 months! I have all the receipts and when this one fails, I'm going down there and getting the original $139.00 refunded. Then it's off to the auto electric shop and buying a starter that will last 5+ years. This is a bit off subject, but I thought it may help someone. Tim
