Hey Welcome to Ford Diesel.

A great way to start is to open up all the exhaust system first.

There is a lot of things that can be done to make your truck more powerful.

Diesels need a lot of air and a free flowing exhaust. As a matter of fact without a free flowing exhaust you will get no power and that would be your weak link to getting more power. Some power mods are more important than others.

Start at the air intake and get a better air intake. Do some searches on "Air Intakes".

Then that goes from the intake to the Turbo. You can leave the stock one or go to a high capacity 1" turbo housing.

From the turbo to the Down-pipe. If your down pipe is stock that means its flat against the firewall (another Fine Ford Idea) you need to replace that with a aftermarket DP I have a "Hypermax Down Pipe" but there are other companies out there.

From the Down Pipe to the catalytic converter that need to be removed, gutted out or replaced with a cat delete pipe part number Ford part number F4TZ-5A212-V.

From the catalytic converter to the muffler (your choice) that has free air flow with at least 4" exhaust and then some folks have even 5" exhaust and then out the muffler.

You now have set your truck up to breathe and you can start adding power. The quickest way at this point to add power is a chip programmer.

Good luck,

BAZ....

Injectors and Differant Outputs

The difference between the injectors is as follows quoted by Richard Maddon Maddog who did the rebuilds for me. I am sure if you are interested in talking they would be pleased to discuss them with you.
We have bench tested the High Output International injector and they do flow more fuel than the stock ford injectors and the modified or stage two injectors. But they are very expensive like $500 per injector.
That is from International and a Diesel Injection Service

The stock Ford injectors (94-97) flow 95 to 100 cc's on our flow bench.
The stock Ford injectors (99-01) flow 120 cc's on our flow bench.
The stage one injectors flow 160 cc's (Stage 1 160 ccs after 2600 rpms) Wide open throttle (WOT)
The stage two injectors flow 160 cc's (Stage 2 160 ccs after 2000 rpms. Mid range and up.
The H.O. International injectors 240cc's
The modified H.O. International injectors are flowing over 300 cc's
These test's are done at a 3000 rpm's, on a 1000 count test.

I was told split shot injectors will not work in my 96 but somewhere I heard that it would in a 97 but I am not sure. I was also told that the fit of 99+ injector would not fit 94 to 97. I am not a professor on injectors but thats what I was told. The Stage Ones were a very substantial increase in horsepower at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). They are saying that the power increase is at least 75 horsepower and as much if not more than propane injection. The injectors are balanced and calibrated. Balanced meaning the spray pattern and calibrated is so that each injector produces within 2 to 3% the same amount of fuel to each cylinder. As compared to HYPERMAX injection re-build Richard told me all the springs inside are checked for the same spring load and all the internal parts are replaced and no used part goes back in like the Hypermax re-builds. It was said to me that the re-build Hypermax does for $880.00 compared to the $995.00 from Richard and I have heard it from an other source that they re-build with used parts that are tested and pass there inspection and the ones I have are all new internal parts including the updated new o-rings.

you need a better chip for one, dp or tony wildman and you need bigger injectors. mine smokes like a coal train when i gun it on the 120hp setting, otherwise it hardly smokes, which means it is set up efficiently.

You need a 6 position with a smoke position to dump more fuel into the engine then it can digest then it should smoke like a freight train... I've seen newer ford with a smoke switch not sure if the older ones can use that or not.

The easiest way to smoke is just run a clogged air filter. Run the filter 60 or 70,000 miles it will hopefully be dirty enough to smoke. If waiting for clog is too long you can probably pour oil on the filter and roll it in some dirt, or cover a good portion of the filter so it cant flow air, like stuff rags in the intake. You need to snuff out the air to get smoke.

as you can see most people arent that fond of this but if you must blow smoke you need BIGGER INJECTORS and a good chip. this is not cheap! if you want cheap throw a smoke bomb in the bed and go for a drive :wink2:

Yes, please make your truck smoke. That'll help get the EPA off of our backs.
The EPA doesn't care about one individual truck; that's for local law enforcement. The EPA relies on averaged air-quality measurements over a whole city or region and focuses on sources of large amounts of air contaminants.

"The Diesel Stop does not promote speeding or racing on the street and does not promote tampering with ANY EPA pollution devices for street driven cars or trucks!"

IMEO, substituting bigger injectors for the injectors the vehicle's emissions were certified with constitutes tampering. I'm quite sure the EPA and CARB would agree.

Honestly, without injectors you will never make the smoke you are after. And then you will need a pyro and boost gauge, maybe a new HPOP, certainly a new tranny if you have an auto. You will quickly discover that you need a new turbo and probably an innercooler because all that fuel you are burning is trying to melt your pistons. No one here really wants to rain on your parade but smoke and power do not come cheap.
