One of the places BDB and I pick up at has been putting the used oil out behind the store in either 5 gallon pails or cubees. Recently, they have been disappearing, but the restaurant manager insists that they have been setting them out.

Sooo, what diabolical tricks could you guys suggest? My first thought was to have the manager keep the grease inside, and set out a couple cubees of glycerin... Anyone got anything better?

I had the same issue. I ended up putting in a barrel and they haven't snagged any out of it yet, probably cause there is some hydrogenated mixed in. When it was in cubies they would snag the clear ones and leave the cloudy. Other than keeping it inside you might try putting some kind of locking bin or box for them to set the cubies in and label it clearly as private property. Then at least they would be blatently stealing it. Some people think if it's outside it's garbage and OK to take.

If the owner balks at a bin or keeping it inside, you might let him know what happened at my source that convinced them to let me leave a drum. One night a bunch of kids camme by and poured the cubies out in the street. The restaurant owner had to clean it up. Luckily he was not fined...

set up a steak out and scare the living crap out of them. Chase them with black suits and baseball bats... That would be a good laugh...

Or follow them after they steal them and steal them back. It could be fun...

Fill them half way with water so when they dump it into there tank it makes for a bit more work for them! maybe you'll get lucky and they don't check for water and it will cause all sorts of problems for them!

Anyone who pours unfiltered cubies into their tank is nuts.
Anyone who does not check for water first is nuts.
Thieves are not nuts...they're just thieves.

heynow there I've got 90,000 successful miles from directly poured oil. But, I know what I'm doing and what I'm getting.

Oh hell you got me, AND I'm a little nuts.

Hey, I like the idea of contaminating the oil with something soluable and damaging so they leave the source all together.

Now that I think of it...one of my restaurants leaves the cubies outside for me. They never call me to tell me when it's outside. I drive by there on my way to work so I check regularly to make sure it's not stolen. The idea of leaving a couple of cubies with rancid oil out there as a trap is BRILLIANT!

Just put some Diesel Secret in those cubies for the thieves to use and see how far they get /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

They might even get tens of thousands of miles, unless the fuel level sending unit fails from WVO in their diesel tank. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

It may sound dumb, but what if you just talked to them? Maybe leave a note. I'm just thinking, personally I always cruise behind a restaurant before asking for oil, so I can check the quality first. If I see jugs that aren't in a renderers barrel I consider them fair game. Plenty of places around here jug it up and set it out back "first come, first serve". If I ever found a note, or was approached by someone who said he/she had a prior claim to the grease, I would gladly cross that place off my list. I'd hate to be shot, chased, or sabotaged by a fellow greaser over a simple misunderstanding.

I agree. If it looks like trash, smells like trash then it's trash for the taking unless marked otherwise.
