this is for a mechanic with 20+years to know.(jcchristn) is a senior member on the diesel stop.com.he posted he repowered 2 L8000 ford with 8.3 and put L-10 in them.this was back in 2005.does anyone know if this works. repowered L-8000 with L-10 engine.im very interested in doing the same.i have a l8000 short nose with a 7.8 ford that blew a cylinder.i removed the cab and hood and started taking pictures and measurements.then started looking for engines that fit.i found alot of engines but not in l8000.the l9000 look the same but have big blocks.found a 3406b in a white gmc volvo .i took pictures and measurements and noticed the cat sits lower in frame(front crossmember) so that the transmission could clear under the rear cab mount crossmember. the 7.8ford is 4.5 feet long and the cat is 6 feet long.at this point i noticed the 7.8ford revs 2400 rpm and big block rev 2150rpm.a loss of road speed and high rpm come in to play but converting a 13 speed (series A) into double over drive (0.63) is 750$.iv done that before so thats no problem.the rtoo would be to condensate for the 5.38 ratio a the back that i want to keep for off road use and mild climbing because my truck is a quad steer 4 axle. its a dump truck with 46.rears and 20-20 front 17.5f box hendrickson suspension ss-hd all bran spanking new.from a -Z tires and braks less than 1000 miles.changed everything but the engine and cab, dumpbox and rad in the past 2 years.40000 miles in my hands 550000 miles life-time. and a full pro paint job bumper to bump.cat 3406b 1989 425hp1550 torque is over kill and 1.5f longer.i do city-urban-on-off hig hway less than 50x5trips in a day, miles round trip.construction-quarry-earth and snow.now my question to u is an L10 low-high flow,internal-external,air-air or after cooled or both(home made).does my L8000 front cross member stay or do i have to take one from a L9000,but will it bolt up to a L8000 front suspension bracket holder.the dog house+10inches and shifter mods is easy. the L10 is 58 inches long. my 7.8ford is 53-54.does the trans support also have to back-up and re-drill holes or simple plate change fabrication mod.the rad and air-air that i have now stays, and shorting the drive shaft and realignment of center bearing is a must.the wires are also not a problem, exhaust output turbo is not on the same side, thats fine.and im sure im forgetting something.does it fit and work or replacing my7.8ford with 8.3 better.240-270hp660-720torque for the ford or 250-280hp 660-800 torque 8.3l or L10 260-300hp700-1050 torque. L10 is a better option.more work, but better.remember L8000 short-nose not Lts or offset axle. thank-you for your time. any info is welcomed.:ford:

Why not hop up the 7.8? It's already there. They can make 425hp too, just wont live 750k miles between rebuilds. FYI, the 7.8 can spin to 3990rpm without valve float.

because of the simple rule of GET OUT OF MY WAY--MORE POWER!!!!--IS--- THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHES.ITS A DUMP TRUCK NOT A RACER THAT TURNS 4000RPM.if it was made for that, ford would have done it stock from the factory.drive shafts and rt transmissions are not made for 5200rpm on overdrive in a quad axle truck carrying 34000kg truck and load.did you not understand my question, simple engine mounts(rear) must relocated.not turn up the screw.even 425hp on a 7.8 is 1000lbs of torque.a big block cat and cummins give 1150lbs torque at the start with no mods, just a simple trans support 5 inchs back re-drill 4 on each side.rule number2 is not to touch the engine.leave it stock because it was designed to run with that factory setting for xxxx amount of hours.i don't want an engine change after every load i do, because the pistons make holes in the hood.turning up the screw is for the backyard mechanic want-a-be who doesn't have tools ,torches ,welding etc ,full fledged garage. has a lot of time but no imagination of consequence on the out come.---catastrophic failure---is the out-come,maybe not today or tomorrow but when the day comes you say WHY DID THIS HAPPEN TO ME.MAYBE I SHOULDN'T HAVE PLAYED WITH IT. IF YOU LIKE BURNING THE CANDLE ON BOTH ENDS THAT'S FINE.TO REBUILD BY ME 7.8L IS 5000$+AND AGAIN FOR WHAT!!700LBS TORQUE.A COMPLETE TRUCK NO LONGER CERTIFIED FOR ROAD USE SALES FOR 3500-5000$. weak engine out and stronger one in.the only mods i want is engine and trans supports, fuel lines and wires.rules number 3 is when your not sure or don't know ASK someone who does.so again has anyone repowered a L8000 with a big block engine.and please dont tell me to put a 2stroke diesel or 3208.10liter in- line 6 mechanical and transmission or bigger,no ecu's or electric pedal.someone from the late 80's early 90',a 20+year mechanic-operator that knows what he's taking about.any info on the topic is good.

I sure hope you werent calling me a wanna be. Ford did design the 6.6 & 7.8 in the trucks to survive spinning to 3990rpm, not to run up to it, but in case of a downhill runaway. Here's a little history on them: Ford tractor operation goes truckin'. | Automotive > Automotive Overview from AllBusiness.com
I was by no means suggesting making 425hp with the 7.8 just by doing the fuel screw. It wont happen. If properly done(matched fuel & turbo) it can. Just like a 3406B with the screws turned up, AND the correct turbo, can make 600hp and still last 750k on an overhaul. Bigger reason a factory tuned 7.8 cant make much power? The EPA regulations.
I have plenty of imagination to come up with putting a 6.6 Ford(New Holland) in my 67 F100. Pretty much the same concept you're after with the Cat in your Louisville. The 20+ yr mechanics dont normally come on these forums, they're usually busy.

if your running 3990rpm on a run away slope, you sir should NOT be driving.and the 3406 is in a class of its own with a crankshaft that could be grinded three times, replaceable cylinder sleeves, factory up grades, and support.14.6l IS THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHS,and if you want more AGAIN THERE'S SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHS BECAUSE THERE;S A 15.8L 3406 KING OF THE HILL POWER WITH 1.5 MILLIONS MILES OF WARRANTY,THE FORD ENGINE WOULD BE USED AS A STARTER ON A BIG BLOCK.ALL IM TRYING TO DO IS PUT GOOD,LONG LASTING POWER IN A TRUCK THATS IN GOOD SHAPE AND NEEDS AN ENGINE,just not the same one that came out.
