folks,

i have now had my truck in to the dealer 2 times to try to solve intermittent surge at idle, and also excesive turbo "stalling, sputtering, coughing" at around 22lbs of boost, but they have once again told me that they cannot find anything wrong. the turbo issue is most concerning me, as it typically only happens when i am towing my 5er, and 22+lbs of boost is easy to hit for long periods of time (uphill). based on my previous experience of having the EBP replaced (a year ago), and from reading on this board, i am thinking i have some issue with either the EBP sensor, EGR valve, and the VGT solenoid -- or a combination of all three??

since the dealer cannot find the problem, i am probably just going to bite the bullet and buy the parts myself. so, is the EBP something that i can replace? not sure if there is some type of software calibration that needs to be done, or if this is a simple swap. if it is something that i can do, how difficult? any special tools? i would imagine that i would start there, since from what i understand the EGR functioning is dependent on info from the EBP.

so, after all this rambling, i guess i am looking to find out if this is something that i should even entertain on doing myself?

thanks.

This is what I did - print out what I have pasted below. Then take it to them and tell them that your complaints mirror what's on this list and you'd like them changed. Worked for me and it may work for you also.

Good luck,

Ron

2003-05 Various Running Problems, Check Engine Light; New EBP Sensor:
Trucks built before 1-17-05 that exhibit buck/jerk, hesitation, lack of power, stalling, stumble, black smoke, surging, rolling idle, changes in engine sound at idle or when driving at a steady speed, or with the trouble codes P2263 or P0299, may have an exhaust backpressure sensor signal that is incorrect or erratic. A revised EBP sensor is available if this is found to be the case. Part number 4C3Z-9J460-A. Broadcast Message 3815.
Normal EBP signal reading should reflect atmospheric pressure with the key on/ engine off. Typically, this is 14.7 PSI/0.88-0.9 volts at sea level, decreasing one PSI/0.10 volt for every 2000 feet of elevation. It should be within 0.5 PSI of BARO and MAP sensor pressure signals.

2003/04 Lack of Power, Runs Rough, Check Engine Light on With EGR Codes:
Some trucks may exhibit the above symptoms, as well as have excessive white or black smoke, and may have the following EGR valve code(s): P0401, P0402, P0403, P0404, P0405, P0406. Diagnostics for the EGR valve have been updated, as has the EGR valve--P/N 4C3Z-9F452-A. Broadcast Message 3614, SSM 18362.

I have done the same thing in the past with my Ford and past Chevys
The service writers eyes usually pop /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif followed with a comment like we'll get it done right away!!!! Most decent service people seem to actually appriciate! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
