How much ATF in the transfer case?!?

1014 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ryanPSD
The manual, if I read it right, says 2.0 quarts. I remember reading several times online 2.1 quarts is when it should start coming out the fill hole, so I only bought three... I just put in 3 quarts and it was all still going in when I finished.

Do I need more, to reach the fill hole? Am I fine? Too much?!

Okay. I only bought 3 quarts of the stuff though, online. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'll see if I can find it (Redline D4 ATF) local, I haven't seen it though which is why I went online. I want to drive my truck and try out the fresh Redline MTL!

If it means anything, my driveway is sloped so the front is slightly downhill... probably not more than 6". Maybe that is enough to keep the level below the fill plug and higher in the front of the transfer case? Just wishful thinking... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Okay I should have checked the level too before freaking out.

It seems to be less than 1/4" from the fill hole. It's right about there... I guess I am fine. I got it all plugged back up and may go for a spin after dinner.
Yup I searched around a lot to see what I should run, and pretty much every other post I read was you "I put the MTL in my tranny and it rocks! blah blah blah /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" so I figured I'd give it a shot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think it will work well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Wow, Casey... now there are two of us. That stuff rocks!

I wasn't having any grinding but it sure made shifting each gear a lot smoother. Second gear used to grind if I did it wrong/too fast, now it's takes like half the effort it did at worst to get into gear.

4 quarts through the shifter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Right on glad you are having a good experience with it like I am. I have never heard of anyone putting MTL in their transfer case, just synthetic ATF. I did 4 qts. through my shifter too....but in my case I didn't have a choice..i broke 2 hardened sockets on my tranny fill plug before I gave up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

just so no one makes a costly mistake... in ryans post he said he is using redline in the transfer, he has already put the MTL in the tranny and he is antsy to run it, but not until he gets his transfer serviced... pardon me for any interuption.....

Yup.

4 quarts of MTL went in the tranny, 3 quarts of ATF went in the t-case. I just drove 250 miles on it including a run down the drag strip and so far so good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I think I will still buy one more quart to make sure the transfer case is full, even if it means I only get one or two more ounces in (which is all I think it will take)... just to be sure.
