Im sure this is going to be an impossible question. I guess what i need to do is find another truck exactly like mine and drive it. I had a cummins previously an you heard almost no upper engine noise like lifters, rockers, injectors etc.
when i climb a steep hill out of my neighborhood, and the engine is warm or cold i hear the normal growl that i have come to know and love but i also hear a bit of upper engine noise too. This may be completely normal but.. once you start reading all these threads about heavy engine parts it makes me nervous. The truck only has 102k on it. It runs strong and idles nice with very little shake. The injector pump is rebuilt and it doesnt smoke. I would like to think she has many miles on it remaining. I guess i need to hear from someone more experienced in this than me and say dont worry about it. Its a diesel!

We have the same truck but mine has the E4OD. I have 58K on the clock. If you are saying that it is louder than a cummins, I wonder which one. My step son has a '98 12V and you can't hear yourself think in front of his with the hood up. Every time he rides in mine he comments about how quiet it is compared to his. your'e about an hour and a half north west of me. If your ever in the 'hood I'd be happy to let you sit in my drivers seat and see if it sounds the same .

Considering your truck is nearly perfect it would be a great example. I bet its nothing more than an injector. Do you use some kind of additive to the fuel. Is there something that could quiet them down a bit as a test? I used to use a fuel additive when the sulfur was removed or reduced around 96' or so. I have not used anything in this truck yet.

I use Diesel Kleen, Says it raises cetane levels. I buy it at Walmart.

what are 'cetane' levels?
I don't know the scientific explanation but in simple terms it's like the octane rating for gasoline. Octane is a measure of "resistance to burn" the higher resistance to burn makes more power when it does ignite....

Guess what.. its fixed and heres what i found out. Originally when i got the truck running i noticed that it was always on high idle. When i would disconnect the idle solenoid the truck would idle down. Instead of fixing the problem i just adjusted down the plunger so it couldnt come in contact with the lever when extended. Yesterday i measured the sensor for the idle circuit and found that it was stuck on all the time. The sensor would never go "open". I replaced the sensor and adjusted my high idle to work properly ie.. 900 or so RPM when cold and once idling warm all the engine knocking from the injectors was gone. So i looked into that and realized that the sensor also governs the pump advance for cold start. This means that even if the idle was affected i was running full pump advance all the time. Now the truck runs perfect. Smooth idle @ 650 with no shaking or vibration and a good consistent clatter that you would expect from that engine. Thanks for all the help guys..

Good Deal

I guess any drive down to my neck of the woods would be strictly social now. Glad to know it's fixed and running like it should
