Re: How to read vin/door code

vin won't help with axles, for reference here's what vin tells you. hth

1, 2, 3rd digits = world manufacturer identifier (in my case, made in us and it's a ford pickup)
4th = brake type
5, 6, 7th = line, series body type (ex: f250, xl, superduty)
8th = engine
9th = check digit, doesn't tell you anything
10 = model year
11= assy plant
12-17 = production sequence

You don't help us answer your questions because you haven't filled out your signature with detailed info about your pickup.

By hook or crook, I learned you have a "99 F250 4wd 7.3 with a manual trans".

All 99 F250 7.3 with either trans have a Ford/Visteon "Sterling" rear axle with 10.5" ring gear and 3.73 axle ratio. So the only question is whether you have LS or not.

The axle code on the Federal Certification Label on the lower doorpost behind the driver's door will begin with either a number or a letter. If it begins with a number, you have an open axle. If it begins with a letter, you have LS.

For example, mine is "C1", so I have LS. If yours is 31, you have an open axle.

My door code reads Axle:RC24; ...

No, you're looking up instead of down. The axle code is under the word "Axle".

Mine has "RC 52" above and slightly to the right of the word "Axle", but the RC code has nothing to do with the axle. RC is short for "region code", but that's the end of my knowledge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

'99 through '04 F-250 PSD axle codes will be 31 or C1. 31 is open axle and C1 is limited slip.
