Another question from a new guy. I have a 1993, 4x4, F-250 7.3 E40D trans. How do I keep my truck from up shifting to early in the upper gears 3-4-5. 1 into 2 seems ok and shifts around 3000 RPM's. Then the next shift comes in around 1800 RPM and lugs the engine, and the next one also. When I'm in overdrive and at cruising speed and push the off button it shifts fine up and down. It's just when I'm moving from a dead stop it shifts to quick into or missing the 3rd gears...Could I be missing and skipping over a third gear? I believe with the off button It is shifting 3 times, should there be 4 shifts? It could be I need educated on how to use the shift button???

There is no 5th. Just 1,2,3,OD

The lugging you're experiencing is overdive. The reason it shifts fine when you push the button is because theres no overdrive. You can adjust the FIPL somehow but I dont know how. Someone illuminate the subject? I wouldnt let it worry you too much.

The 3 shifts you will feel, there is also the torque converter clutch lockup which you may or may not feel as it is about a 1/2 shift.

Shift timing and firmness can be changed by adjusting the TPS (called FIPL by Ford). Setting it higher will give higher, harder shifts.

If you do a yahoo search for "setting fipl" you should find instructions.

You can check the adjustment of the FIPL by back-probing the center wire of the FIPL sensor connector with a digital volt meter. The voltage should read 1.0-1.1 volts at idle, 1.6-1.9 at 30 MPH, and 2.0-2.5 at 55 MPH.
If these readings can't be achieved, replace the FIPL sensor and re-start this procedure. It may be necessary to remove the epoxy from the bracket screws (T-27 torx screws) to adjust a new FIPL sensor. The FIPL/throttle position sensor can be bought at most auto parts stores for around $20.00,
