Hey guys,

I have over 40k on my 03 and I need to service my transmission. I have the external filter and I am about ready to order some Mercon SP. Can someone fill me in on the right procedures?

I tried searching, but didnt find anything of value.

Thanks!

Thanks, I am not looking to flush it now, I was going to wait until 60k or so to do that. Do I just drain the fluid out of the pan, change the filter then replace the drained amount of fluid?

Sorry my bad...
Yep, just keep up with the fluid removed..best I can remember it's about seven or eight quarts...So, get something that will hold that amount..I was able to find a clear/opaque five gallon container and marked it off with a Magic Marker in quart increments.

Now, on the external filter..The canister was a bear to get off..even bent the bracket holding the housing..but it did come off..watch for your O-ring..don't think you get a new one with your filter...Put a little fluid on it before install.

It would be my suggestion to fill the canister with new Mercon SP and gently lower the filter to absorb the fluid, adding more as needed. It is almost impossible to screw the canister back with the filter inside the canister..Just hold the canister under the housing and reach and get the filter and snap in on the plastic holding clips and then screw the canister on...a little messy, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif but the only way I could get the thing put back together. Don't forget to keep up with how much fluid you used/removed from the filter.

Good luck..hope this helps ya /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Try an impact on the external filter housing...a couple of quick blips usually gets em right off...with no damage to the brackets.

My easy way to service tranny

Step 1 Start Truck
Step 2 Go to dealership
Step 3 Pay said dealer $100 to service transmission
Step 4 Go home and do something productive like watch TV instead of working on transmission
Seriously, I looked at the procedure mentioned above and it is not time or cost effective if you have a good dealer anywhere near your location. It cost over $80( just for the 20 qts of fluid) just to get the materials to do the service. I do the fuel filters myself and the air filter, but on these trucks it is not time/cost effective to do the oil or tranny when the dealers price is just above the raw materials cost.

There is nothing wrong with doing it this way, however, there are some of us who like to work on our machines and learn new stuff about them. To each his/her own................

The only problem I see with this approach is...My dealer charges $180.00 to flush a transmission /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Yeah, the $100 is to change the fluid in the pan and the external filter. Doing it yourself costs ~$50 and one hour of your time. I can service my tranny twice for the cost of doing it once at the dealer.

Next year I am going to flush it and fill it. I'll do some price checking on having the service done at Jiffy Lube, if I provide the fluid. I think its about $30 for them to do it if you provide the fluid and filters. $100 (fluid/filters) + $30 (usage of the machine at JL) = $130.

Still a lot cheaper than having the dealer do it.

Each to his own, I wouldn't let Jiffy Lube back my car or truck out of the garage much less put any tool on it.

Point well taken. I'll just follow the article online about how to do it in the driveway. $100 for a tranny flush/fill is a good deal plus its a good learning experience for later on down the road (120k miles...)

just some advise... i would not have a complete trans service done with flush machine. all trans flush machines keep some of the new fluid from previous service in tank and most shops have only one machine for all services meaning they will mix trans fluid "x" with sp fluid stick to manual drain and repl filters

Guys...glad you like the article,

Remember the hotter you can get the trans the better. Make sure you get a new O-Ring for the external filter.

Where do you get the O Ring's from?

wlong,

The part# is listed in the article...get them from Ford. The external filter (motorcraft) did not come with one.
