I've been considering doing the hutch mod/harpoon mod. My question, if those small screens in the tank get clogged and gunked up can that lower your fuel economy? Or is that just a small possibility? My truck runs fine and doesnt have power loss, but I feel if those screens are gunked up it would lower mpg. Just like a clogged fuel filter. Any input?

Yes poor fuel pressure can cause poor fuel economy.
Agreed^

Basically, if you don't have proper pressure supplying the injectors, you will not have adequate pressure inside the injector body. Low pressure basically causes a poor injection atomization when during the injection event which results in poor economy, rough idle, rough running, etc.

Okay. Like I said, the truck runs and idles fine but everyone seems to say do the hutch mod. Plus with 245k on my truck Im sure the tank has never been dropped so those screens have a pretty high chance of being dirty right?

Where can I get a girl pressure tester? Local auto parts store sell them? What should my fuel pressure be at? I have a stock fuel system.

Here's a link to the mod and how to do it, also gives good info:
Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

Basically, what the hutch mod is for is to keep from air entering the fuel lines when there is negative pressure due to the o-rings on the fuel lines. Air in fuel can cause in poor economy, low pressure, etc.

Go to diesel orings.com. He has a test fitting that screws into the fuel bowl. There are two ports. Both are on back of bowl. The one higher on the back and closes eat to driver's side, is pre filter, the other is post. Test rig you van use a tire pressure gauge or gut a gas pressure tester and take the hose off that screws onto the Schrader valve, fit a long hose that will sneak out the front of hood back to driver's window where it screws into a hydraulic pressure gauge so you can read it going down the road.
Do the hutch mod and install a pre pump filter housing to inside of frame. Then use a big spin on diesel filter separator with drain in the bottom.

Does the filter in the strictly diesel kit have a drain valve? Or is there a filter I can use in place of that filter?
