after a VERY hard weekend something happened around town. i hit only 30 psi and then she didn't stop smoking when i let off, i turned the radio down and there was a slow but loud "ting" sound coming from the back of the motor. i pulled over within 100 ft and she was smoking white, alot. thought it would be the turbo. brought it home and took off intake and exhuast and the fins have made some contact, but there is very little endplay and the fins are fine and spin free. could it still be the turbo??? oil is clear of antifreeze and there is no leaking anywhere. the turbo has been fluttering within the last 3 months so.... any ideas??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
thanks for the much needed help.

prolly finshed the turbo off completely and now its passing oil on the exhuast side!!!!! LOL hitting 40psi isnt a good thing for a stocker.

ANY contact is not good at all-if there is that much play then it is working against the seals allowing it to pass oil.

Good luck

What exactly is the endplay in the turbo, how to check it? Is it like the shaft moving from side to side?

I know the stockers don't like 35psi and I can somewhat easily hit 30-34psi pretty consistently with twildman's extreme. But I want to make sure I know when my turbo will go out.

Endplay would be side to side pulling the shaft in and out, you want zero end play. Radial play would be basically wiggling the shaft up and down, they will usually have a little radial play but if it contacts the housing your screwed.

tell me how. i have never posted a video before. right now i have the original copy on 8mm film that i can play through the camera and i have copied it on to a normal vhs tape. my friend has a fast computer probably going to have to use that cause mine can't play videos. but let me know what i have to do and i'll get it up there.
by the way there is a guy on my friends "cummins" website that is selling video of the entire weekend for 10 bucks and advertises tug of war so... i should get 10% at least. haha

According to Geoff and TDS, you want .001 - .004" of end play when rebuilding a turbo, I still have to check mine before reinstalling with the .84 housing. You check with a dial indicator.

Sounds like you're already going with a newer bigger one, what's next to fail, head gaskets or head bolts? Man, I got to finish my truck!
(still have the turbo on the bench where it's been for WEEKS)

no i am done with head gaskets, the headstuds are holding up fine. don't want to do that again for quite some time.

just got the turbo torn apart and the intake fins look as if they were ever so slightly ground down with a file, but the exhuast side looks like the ends of the fins have been knicked very bad. there is 1/16" tears along the tops of the fins. end play did not seem that bad but the lateral movement made easy contact with the housing.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
that's bad.
I think it's turbo time!
At least with the damage on the exhaust side, those pieces did not go through your engine.
My intake side wheel was damaged, likely the crappy stock airbox that I just ripped out last night. Don't have the engine together yet, so I can't be sure I've fixed the problems I was having (no power cold)
but, the truck ran so good warmed up, I'm confident it's not "dusted"
It will be like a new truck when I get it togehter.... hopefully
(3" DP, .84 turbo housing, new turbine wheel, gutted ebpv, homemade tymar, one repaired VC harness plug, replaced FPR screen, rebuilt FPR)

sounds good, that was a big concern of mine~ having the wheel shred apart and get into the engine. i think i need alot more air anyway so no time like now (when the stock part goes KABOOM!)to upgrade /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hopefully the new puffer will give it more air. That truck will screem (more than it does already that is) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your one wild man Andrew.
Steve and the rest of the Indiana boys want to make sure you make it to Schied's in August.
