I need some honest answers about Maintenance on my 2007 F250 Lariat Super Duty 2WD CC with 6.0L PSD. I purchased this truck From a Dodge Dealer so have no records as to what has been done maintenance wise to the truck. The truck is very clean and shows no kind of wear of any kind. It has 68000 miles on it which is a little high for a 07. It was used for pulling a 5th wheel trailer and has air bags on rear axle. I bought it to tow my Jayco Designer 35 ft 5th wheel. I have towed about 500 miles with it so far and have not had any problems and love the power especially when going up hills. This is the first diesel pickup truck that I have ever owned. After reading all that I could in the forum about problems and required maintenance. I got worried that maybe I made a mistake. If I would have went in this forum before I bought the truck I would have bought a dodge instead, although I have always favored fords.

Today I went to the ford dealers and got a oasis check which showed, No recalls or outstanding things that needed to be done. They did find that it had a new grill replaced when it had 28,000 miles on it. I asked if and when it would need major service and was told the next major service would be due at 90,000 miles if the 60,000 mile service had been performed. They had no record of the 60,000 service being performed. So I have no way of knowing if it was performed by previous owner or not. The Dealer wants $950.00 to do the major 60,000 mile service. This would include, lube, oil, filter, grease job, flush transmission, flush fuel system, de carbonize intake and cylinders, flush cooling system, flush power steering, brake fluid flush, replace fuel filters, and replace air filter, and rotate tires.

Are all of these things necessary? Do you do all of these things or have them done to your vehicles? I know the lube oil and filter are, But all of these flush Items?? I do not race or hot rod and the truck will be driven less than 7,500 miles a year pulling my fifth wheel to Texas and back every year for a couple of months a 2,800 mile round trip and maybe 1,000 miles while there. The rest of the time a couple of 1,400 mile trips. We have another vehicle which we drive all of the time so the truck sits most of the time. I start it up and drive it once every few weeks to exercise it and keep the batteries charged. I am sorry this is so Long, But I really would like to know and have an honest opinion.
TIA

Don't pay stealer prices. Those things do need to be done but not all at once, you'd go broke if you listened to Ford. Just do one or 2 of those 60,000mile items every time
You get your oil changed and I highly recommend you find a place other than the stealer to do it, just be sure you use the correct filters and fluid. I used a wix oil filter and is collapsed within itself and choked my engine. Just ask for the right stuff but have another shop do it, dealers are way too expensive. Also, don't freak out, if the truck was taken care of then thete is no need to rush into these flushes and lube, they don't need to occurs right this second but you definitely should check them all.

Thank You for the advise and information. Like you I don't trust the Stealers as I got shafted big time by one on a car that they claimed had to be de carbonized. I found out later all they did was pour some crap down the carb and charged me $250. ANyway thank you.

every time I take one of my trucks to a dealer (any dealer and any make) I get overcharged. Ford and GM are by far the worst and I think GM is the king of the stealerships, they rape our company everytime we bring a truck in to get repaired. Worse yet, they can't even service the vehicles they sold us. We have a crew cab 4X4 C4500 with a duramax that constantly goes into limp mode and a transmission that constantly has issues like today, we have 2 trucks (a C2500 and the 4500) that won't shift from 3rd into 4th and none of the 3 dealers will work on the allison transmissions so we have to find a transmission service center and we are always out of luck on the 4500, even a week after we bought it we couldn't get it serviced, it won't fit in any of their garages.
Ford charged me $120.00 to change 2 bulbs in my instrument cluster. they told me they had to charge me a $90.00 diagnostic fee.....to determine that 2 bulbs were blown??? When he came to me with that estimate I told them I will just do it myself when I find the time to do it and that's when he told me he already had the dash apart and they could just change them in 2 seconds and I had to pay the diagnostic fee anyway since they took it apart. I have a lot of stories since I have an 04with a 6.oh liter that has had many EGR issues as well as head gaskets, injectors and oil cooler issues. They have made a lot of money off our business so trust me when I say take your truck to Valvoline instant oil change and have them do the lube and filter work. have them test your coolant to see if it needs to be replaced, if it doesn't than don't do it, the previous owner probably already did. I don't want to say the flushes and such aren't a necessity, they are but they don't need to happen exactly when ford recommends, do them one at a time and good luck with that truck, you may need it. Also, I know the cummins is a great engine but it has it's share of problems too and as far as the truck itself, it can't hold a candle to the trucks ford puts out, they just don't last as long.

Remember....People come to these forums to discuss there problems. Not brag about how great and trouble free their truck is. The later 6.0L's are good engines.

Since you don't have a good maintenance history on the truck the best thing you can do is change the oil and filters asap. ONLY use OEM filters. Others will not fit correctly or have slight design variations that can cause you serious issues. You would not believe the amount of people that come on here with what they think are serious problems that are solved by nothing more than using the correct filter.

Get your oil changed by somebody that does diesel maintenance. Do NOT just run it in to your corner quick lube. Whether or not you use a dealer is a personal choice. IMO, if you can find a dealer that has a big diesel shop that would be the best place to go. Been taking mine to one for 5 years and never had a problem. Prices are reasonable also.

I tend to avoid the packaged maintenance plans. They seem like they're stacked to maximize profit. Not provide needed services.

The next thing you need to is get the coolant system flushed. I would imagine it has never been done and is in serious need of some TLC. Do some research here on the Ford Gold Coolant. Neglecting the coolant system can cost you major bucks down the road. Most folks are getting rid of the Ford Coolant and going to an ELC type coolant.

You also need to get you some gauges on there pretty quick. The dash gauges are nothing more than an idiot light posing as a gauge (except boost....it's good). You need something you can monitor ECT and EOT with. Since you trailer a lot, watching your trans temp would be a good idea also. I use the ScanGaugeII. It's not glamorous but, IMO, the most functional and best value out there. You can pick it up for $159 on Amazon and watch just about any parameter on the truck. It comes with some stock gauges to get you going and you can custom program numerous other parameters you'd like to monitor. Let me know if you want more info and I can point you to a couple threads on different forums and send you a list of parameters you can monitor through their XGauges.

Motorcraft (Ford) filters or Racor (Ford's manufacturer of their filters) are the ones to get. Home - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks is where I get my filters. NationalFleetParts.com - National Fleet Parts,Inc. is another source.

Keep the filters and oil changed. There is a lot of diverse opinions regarding which oils to use. I prefer Amsoil products. Others tell me I am silly to spend the money. I think the main thing is to keep up on the maintenance. Oil changes as often as your driving habits dictate. Lubes. Batteries. Tire pressure. You know, the regular stuff. A diesel is happier when you take care of it. Learn about some of the fuel additives available. I use Stanadyne additive.

I was going to Jiffy Lube for a number of years until I started checking their work. On one occation I checked my front differential only to find it was empty. I removed a manual tranny because of a bad main bearing only to find that it, too, was empty after years of Jiffy Lube servicing that truck. So, I do it myself. I figure if I have to crawl under the truck to check their work I might as well just do it myself.

If you need an owner's manual of the diesel supplement you can go to;
https://www.flmowner.com/servlet/Co...oLogin=Owner/Page/OwnerGuidePage&ord=34863948
and download a free PDF copy.

There are some other resources available. If you do a search you can probably find a copy of the 6.0L Bible and the 6.0L Bible for '04 and up. The latter tells of changes made to the original engine in Ford's effort to correct some of the early problems with the engine. I thought they were interesting reading.

And one more thing. Drive it at least once or twice a week. In fact, run the crap out of it. You want to get the EGT's up to burn the soot out. These trucks, particularly the turbo, don't like to set around. Rust, soot, etc..... will cause the turbo to start sticking.

Alot of good advice above: I agree with Matt--->If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, and you have time? Change your oil & Filter yourself as well as check and service the rest of the fluids yourself... Gives you peice of mind that it has actually been done and done right... {Most} not {All} but most corner lube businesses are pretty busy, and have cars backed up and tend to hurry through your service, hence neglect to replace fluid after draining or as I have seen draining and not even putting the drain plug back in as well as not filling... I could go on...

Just something to think about... These engines and Transmissions are not cheap... It only takes 5 min for one so called qualified person to totally destroy either...

Most Important: As stated above===>Stay on top of your coolant... You might think about a coolant filter setup...Those clogged EGR really can bite you in the butt...

Congrats on your new 6.0L: It's a great truck... don't have any regrets... Only if you neglet the maintanence...

One thing I have learned with my 7.3L... If you slowly learn to do all this yourself... You save yourself alot of money... I mean alot...
