Seems lately that my engine is idling faster than what it used to. When I start the truck and it idles a few minutes the choke does go off but it doesn't seem to drop down as low as before. This could just be a difference in noise since it is now summer here in texas and believe me it is getting hot. Could it be that during the cold winter when the truck's choke would go off there seemed to be more of a difference in the sound of the high and low idle (choke and no choke)? After my 30 mile drive to work the truck is idling about 800 maybe 850 rpm. Seems a little fast to me so I figured that this was the place to find out.

*CHOKE* Ew. Ugly. I think you mean the high idle solenoid. Yes, take a close look at it. Over time, the solenoid rod (which is adjustable) can unscrew, and extend farther then it should, resulting in a very high idle, and then prventing a full return to normal idle at temperature. Generally speaking, you should see about 1/16th to 1/18th of an inch of an air gap between the plunger and the throttle lever. If it is out of adjustment, simply screw it in with the appropriate sized wrench. The rod has a hex head on it for this purpose.

OK,

I looked at the fast idle solenoid and the plunger is about 3/8 of an inch away from the throttle plate but the engine is still running at a fast idle, 800 rpm to be exact with engine warm. The decal on the valve cover says that curb idle should be 650 rpm + or - 50 rpm. Therefore the 800 is way more than the 600 to 700 that is on the decal. What should I do now?

Mine was idleing at about 650 or 700 and it felt a little low, so I set it up to 800 or so the other day. I doesn't hurt anything to have them idle high (makes it easy with a stick).

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Oops. Yes. 1/8th.

However, that looks like it's not your problem. Next thing to do would be disconnect the throttle cable and cruise control cable to see if that allows the pump to return fully to idle. If that doesn't change anything, and it is not the idle screw holding the throttle open, I'd have to guess your pump is foobar'd. 650 is spec, and its what they all idle at if properly set. I'd hook it up to a timing meter and have that and your idle speed checked before swapping out the pump.

When you say idle screw......I saw I think two different screws along side the throttle bracket....could I try adjusting either of those?

Yes, one of them is max throttle, the other is idle. You'll be able to guess which is which when you look at them.
